Prompt: "I don't want you, I need you."
The relationship didn't work out the way it should've. It was filled with fighting and nonstop verbal abuse on both sides, leading it into the ground fast. Of course, that was when you were in a terrible mindset, not allowing yourself to truly see your own beauty and that made Alex angry and confused. Now, you loved yourself, but you knew he would never let you love him. Saying that you had been hopelessly in love with him from the start was an understatement. You had always known Alex, since you guys were in elementary school, and you had lost him due to the fact that you weren't able to keep a healthy relationship in the state of mind that you had been in.
Your finger hovered over the call button as you stared at the name that was on the screen. Alex wouldn't answer, you broke his heart. You hurt him so bad and you know that he wouldn't want to get back together with you, but you couldn't help the thoughts in your head. You couldn't help wanting to cuddle with again or hold his hand or kiss his lips. Alex was the best person you had ever met. He was super patient, sweet, and handsome and now you felt empty without him. You pressed the button quickly, holding the phone up to your ear as you heard the ring on the other end. It had been 5 whole months since you had spoken to him, and you doubted that he still had your number.
"Hello?" Your heart stopped as you heard his soft, smooth voice. "Hello? I know someone's there I can hear you breathing." You sighed and began to speak.
"H-hey, Alex," you said as you cleared your throat. You could audibly hear his breath hitch as you continued. "I-I miss you...and I know that probably doesn't mean much and you might not want to see me, but I-"
"Meet me at the lake at 7," he said before hanging up, the words he said staying in your head. Meet me at the lake at 7. Alex wanted to see you? He didn't really want to; he was probably just being nice. Alex sounded like he was really angry and annoyed, like he had absolutely no desire to see you, but now you were going to see him either way. That is...if you weren't stood up. Alex wouldn't stand you up though, he wasn't that shallow.
You were so nervous that you couldn't eat dinner, so you were driving to a lake on an empty stomach that was filled with butterflies. You noticed his car already there and you pulled up next to it. You climbed out of your car, seeing him sitting on the end of the dock with his feet dangling in the water. With your shoes and socks abandoned, you walled down the dock, shyly placing yourself next to him and reaching your feet into the cold water.
"What'd you want," he asked as you both continued to look at the ripples your feet were making in the water. "Like, why do you miss me?"
"Why wouldn't I miss you? You-you're the best person that I've ever met. You tried to help me with my anxiety and depression and I just treated you terribly," you said as you looked over at him. "I'm sorry...by the way." You saw his face contort from confusion as he looked up at you.
"Why would you be sorry? You needed space," Alex said as his eyes bored into yours. "If anyone should be sorry, it should be me. I-I yelled at you everyday for it. I just...I didn't want to let you go."
"It was best for both of us, Alex. I-I didn't want to let you go either, but we needed it. The fighting was too much, especially when it was mixed with my depression and anxiety." You reluctantly reached out to place your hand on his. You felt him tense up and went to pull away until he cleared his throat.
"I-it's fine, (Y/N). Keep it there." You smiled at him as he smiled back. "(Y/N), I want you back."
"Alex, I want you, too," you said back as you scooted closer. Alex shook his head as he laced his fingers through yours.
"No. No, you don't understand. I don't want you, I need you. I've needed you for all this time, but I've just been too stupid to even call you or anything," he said as you heard his voice crack. "When we broke up, I was a wreck. I still am a wreck but being with you will hopefully make it better."
"I need you, too," you whispered as you leaned your head on his shoulder, cuddling into his side. "So...we're together again?" You felt his chin rest on your head and a shrug of his shoulders as he wrapped his arm around you.
"If that's what you want," Alex answered as he held on to you tight.
"That's exactly what I want."
