Hope you enjoy! I love writing different characters for the reader :)

You sprinted from your house, scared. The sting of your father's last slap across your face had hurt so much, you hated it! You were done. It was time for you to make your way in the world.

Of course, nothing could have prepared you for all the cars that almost ran you over, the pedestrians that snapped, "Hey, watch out!" when you bumped into them.

Finally, you found yourself at the park. It was cold and dark by the time you got there and you were shivering, wearing just a t-shirt, shorts and a light jacket, plus your favorite shoes. You wrapped your arms around yourself and tucked your knees to your chest. At least the bench was a little warm.

"Excuse me," an accented voice said. You looked up and saw a boy with white hair and brown eyes crouching so he was on eye level with you.

"Are you okay?" he asked politely. You shrugged and let go of your knees. There was something about this boy that you just couldn't place.

He sat next to you and lightly touched your arm. "Do you want to talk about it?"

His eyes- big and brown, the color of delicious fudge that had just come out of the oven- seemed to stare into your soul. (Dang Ryou!) You looked right into them, swallowing.

This feeling..... I can't place it.

"What's your name?" he asked, tilting his head slightly. "I'm Ryou Bakura."

Y/n, you signed, feeling the letters of your name vibrate on your fingers.

"Y/n?" he said. "I know sign, yeah. Are you deaf?"

Okay, it was a valid question, but did not have the anwer most people thought when they first met you.

No, just mute. You swallowed again, watching him carefully. Something told you that you could trust Ryou. You couldn't say what, but you could.

"Okay, Y/n, why are you out in the park in the middle of the night? It's not safe." He set a hand on your shoulder and looked into your eyes. "Did you run away?"

Your eyes sold you out and told the whole story. Ryou reached up to cup the red mark on your face, stroking his thumb across it. Tears leaked out of your eyes.

"Your parents...... they hurt you," he whispered, putting his other hand on your other cheek. "Don't worry, Y/n, as long as I'm around, they won't touch you ever again."

I can't explain this feeling in my gut, Ryou, you signed. But I'm afraid of it.

Ryou smiled kindly. "I'm sure you'll figure it out. For now, let's call it independence."

You nodded and let him pull you up. "You can stay with me if you want. It's your choice, but I will say the park bench isn't very comfortable."

Ha, you signed, but you still followed him, trusting him with your safety.

It had been six whole months since you'd first left home and here you were, back in front of the door you had wanted to avoid your whole life. Ryou had insisted, however.

"I'm right here," he said, gripping your hand tightly. You nodded and, summoning as much courage as you could, knocked.

The door opened on your mother's face. When she saw you, her expression softened. "Y/n! You- you came back?"

You glared at her. Mom. I left because of you and Dad.

"I'm so sorry, honey," she said quietly, reaching for your hand.

"NO!" you exclaimed, surprising even yourself. "NO! YOU LEFT ME IN THE CARE OF MY FATHER WHO TOOK NO GREATER PLEASURE THAN TO HIT ME! YOU REFUSED TO DEFEND ME!" If looks could kill, your mother would have been a pile of ash on the carpet.

A long moment of silence passed. Finally, your mother hissed, "You'll regret that, you little-"

The noise of a slap echoed in the air. A red mark appeared on your mother's face and Ryou was suddenly in front of you, hand out.

"Ryou?" you whispered.

He turned to you and closed the door on your mother. "Your voice is beautiful," he whispered, cupping your face with both hands. His lips landed on yours and he pulled you close.

It started to rain as you wrapped your arms around your neck and kissed back. After air had run out, you pulled away and giggled at the sensation of his long white hair tickling your cheeks.

"Let's go home," you said.

"But you are home," Ryou replied, confused.

"A roof does not a home make," you told him. "I want outta here."

Ryou smiled and took your hand. "Let's go, then." He kissed you one more time, then led you down the sidewalk, letting you take your first breath of fresh air in over six months.
