There was a stillness in the castle as we entered and headed for the dining area. Everyone quietly ate their food and drank their ale. We sat with Alexanders brothers, Mary and my father. We avoided looking at each other knowing that soon our lives will be changed forever. When Christopher walked in late, and sat at our table, I witnessed dry tears on his face. He avoided making eye contact with me and my heart went out to him.
This was no easy matter for any of us. I turned my head and saw my husband starring at me with so much love in his eyes that I truly felt cherished. I swallowed a sob and held myself intact, not wanting to show weakness. I was a warrior too, and I must start acting like one!
When the servants brought out the scones and fruits, Alexander stood from his chair and said in a loud and unwavering voice. "Tomorrow is our last day of training. Sleep well tonight my friends, because tomorrow we will train long and hard. I would like to take this moment to tell each and everyone of you that it has been an honor to have you by my side all these years. I would not trust anyone else to have my back in the upcoming battle. May God be with all of us in these dark days ahead." he said in a broken voice.
All the warriors, in the huge room hit their chest with their fist three times, and chanted the Scottish anthem. Their voices were deep and loud, and by the time they were done, everyone had tears in their eyes, incuding myself.
Alexander looked down on me and strecthed out his arm and I took his hand and followed him up the stairs and into our chambers. We spent the night in each others arms. My husband whispered endearments all night long in my ear, and my heart was overwhelmed with love through the sleepless night.
