Reader's Point of View
It wasn't unusual to have an expedition fail. Matter of fact, it was all too common. Like a few other things. Such as gear malfunctions. No matter how prepared you were for an expedition something could go wrong and it was the same for our gear. No matter how many times our gear was checked, faith would have it mess up if it wanted it to. Luckily for myself, it had never happen to me; however, as a captain, I had to make sacrifices. Today just so happened to be one of those days.
"Damn it! My gear isn't working!" I heard Eren Yeager yell and panic from a distance.
During our expedition meeting I remember Eren was ordered to be separate from his squad; in charge by Captain Levi. However I sure don't remember that he was supposed to be by himself and I was sure he was yelling because he was. I stopped in my tracks and ordered my squad to continue without hesitation. They were sure to be fine as we were ordered to retreat and were further ahead then the other squads. Our expedition had failed miserably and we had already lost far too many. It didn't help that a storm had been brewing.
"Captain. Where are you going?" I heard one of my squad members ask.
"I'll catch up. Just keep pushing forward and don't look back for anything or anyone." I turned around and followed the panicked voice of Yeager. I could barely hear him over the storm winds speeding up but I managed to find him regardless. "Yeager. Where's the rest of you?"
"They're gone." I could tell by the tears rising in his eyes that he meant they were dead. "I...I couldn't save them."
"Calm down." I inspected his gear quickly and caught the issue. There was no way his gear was going to work again. I quickly started taking my own off. "Take your gear off."
"What are you doing?"
"Do as I say." In our current state, I didn't brother to show panic or emotions. We needed to get going and we needed to get going quickly. Yeager started taking off his gear as well. "Listen carefully to me Yeager. My tank doesn't have enough gas left for us to both us it. I want you to take it and catch up with the others."
"But... Captain!"
"I told you to do as I say!" I snapped at him. "You are possibly humanities' last hope. I can't leave you behind here. You're already off the course you were instructed to follow but I will assume it's because of what happened to the others who were supposed to be with you. Captain Levi and the rest of his squad won't find you on time over here. You will do as I say and you will not hesitate. I am far more experienced out in the field than you are so you need to trust me."
Eren looked down in anger as I started to strap my gear to him. "I only ask one thing of you Yeager." We looked each other in the eyes as I was done strapping him up. "Give this to Captain Levi." I took a folded slip of paper out of my uniform pocket and handed it to Eren.
"What is it?" He asked, gripping onto the paper tightly.
"Something personal. Don't ask questions or read it. Do you understand?" He nodded. "Good. Now go!"
"Captain (your last name) I..."
"I said go!" I shoved Yeager off the tree which we had been standing on and before he hit the ground he used my 3DMG to catch onto another tree. He looked back at me for a second. "Don't you dare look back Yeager!" I yelled to push him forward. When I was sure he was out of my view I took two swords from his gear and took my stand. Titans were approaching. I smirked, knowing good and damn well this may be the last breaths I ever take. "Come and get me you bastards."
Levi's Point of View
"Where in the hell were you?" I yelled at Yeager as we entered the walls and dismounted our horses and the wagons. He had caught up with Captain (your name)'s squad and met us inside the walls. He had caught a ride on one of their wagons from God knows where he was. I held him tightly by the collar and just so happened to catch a glimpse at the number on the gear he wore. My eyes widen as I knew that number all to well. I released his collar and let him fall to the ground. "Why in the hell are you wearing Captain (your name)'s gear?" He just looked down to the ground with tears in his eyes as Mikasa and Armin approached him from behind. "I asked you a question Yeager. Now answer it!" I grew pissed with his silence.
