Seeing your wife in pain is in fact, painful. With you there standing there helpless, it's hard because honestly you can't really do anything when your wife is about to have your child.

"It's okay, River. Just think, how-"

"Leave me bloody alone, Doctor!" she screamed as I tried to comfort her.

Giving her a look, I backed away and let the nurses take control.

"Mrs. River, give us another push, one more push," the nurse asked as she stood near the end of my wife.

Slipping my hand into River's, she groaned with force and tilted her head back. My mind began to wander as I looked at her. How did we get here?

My memories slipped to the night she found out we were expecting. It was ironically unexpected, seeing that we never really intended to have children. I never thought I could, after what happened to my previous ones. But life is spontaneous. And spontaneous moments are what make life truly precious.

"River!" I yelled as I strolled down the TARDIS's twisty hallways, wondering where she was. With my eyebrow raising, my hands found my pockets when suddenly, a soft sniffle echoed.

"Sweetheart?" I asked loudly and quickly headed to the end of the corridor. The bathroom door was closed and tapping on it with angst, I pressed my ear up to it. Soft cries were heard inside and immediately I was concerned.

"River, is everything alright? Can I come in?" I asked, leaning against the door.

Gradually, the door clicked to signal is was opening. Pushing the door, my River crouched on the bathroom floor like a helpless child and in her hand, a stick.

Mascara streamed down her pale cheeks as her eyes glue to the white stick.

"River? What's going on?" I asked, reaching her level.

"I'm...I'm gonna be a mum," she mumbled.

"Excuse me?" I asked.

"I can't do it, Doctor. I'm not ready."

"Ready for what, sweetheart? You're making me-"

"We're gonna have a baby, Doctor," she suddenly said. Her red eyes turned to me. "We're gonna be parents."

I'm gonna be a dad? Again? I thought. Frozen in my position, but my hearts beating a million miles, I stayed silent.

"Can we do it, darling? Can we raise our own?" she asked helplessly.

Giving her a reassuring smile, I sat next to her and wrapped my arm around her shoulder. Kissing her forehead, I gave her a squeeze and said, "Yeah, I think we'll be the best parents in the world."

"You really think so? I mean, we're Time Lords, Doctor."

"So? The Time Lords raised children. They raised an empire, River," I turned towards her and smirked, "I think we can handle a little one."

She chuckled and sniffled. My wife leaned her head on my shoulder and exhaled greatly. "If you believe we can do this, then let's do it."

The next months were a joy yet, sometimes rough. Despite River was a tough girl, it was hard for her being...big. She wanted to keep traveling, keep going on these dangerous adventures, but I kept insisting she stayed home and rest.

"Sweetheart, I think I'm going to go insane if I don't get out of here!" she exclaimed as we stood by the consul, her large stomach enhanced in her green shirt.

"River, we've been over this-"

"Doctor, if you don't do this, I swear-"

"I won't allow it!"

"Since when did you become the boss of me?"

"River, stop this madness!" I motioned my hand towards her, "Think about the baby here! What if something happened?"

"Our baby is perfectly safe, sweetie!" Her hands clasped her stomach. "He's in good hands!"

"He?"

"Yes, I have a feeling its a boy."

"Look, boy or girl, you're not going out!"

"Doctor!"

"Look, love," I advanced towards her and placed my hands on her warm belly, feeling the baby move slightly, "We can go to the spa or something quiet, but nothing crazy ok?"

She moved her jaw and looked down at her enormous belly. Placing her hands on mine, she clasped them, sending small tingles down my arm. Exhaling, her wonderful eyes looked at mine.

Shaking her head, River said, "Why do you always win?"

I grinned. "Because I'm the Doctor, and I can tell you," Crouching down to my wife's belly, I placed my hands on either side of it and said to our baby, "We would never let anything happen to her."

"Oh, so you think it's a girl now?"

"What? I have a feeling."

She laughed and in moments, we were on our first adventure with our child. And shortly afterwards, we went into labor, just before we went on the purple water bath.

And here we were now. Waiting for that moment to where life was literally to be in our hands.

"I see the head!" someone shouted.

"Oh, River!" I pronounced, ready to be a father once more.

"One more, Mrs. River! Just one more," a nurse exclaimed as she stood by the end.

And with one final push and a feeling of my hand about to break, there seemed to be a song of cries. A beautiful cry that seemed to wash away all of the worry and anxiety.

Our child was here.

"Mr. and Mrs. Doctor, you have a healthy baby girl," the nurse said, bringing up our swaddling, red baby. Nothing could be better than this moment. Seeing the gift you've been waiting for for nine months.

"Love, look at her," I said, not leaving my eyes off her. A happy tear fell from my eye. And I wasn't the only one.

"I see her, Doctor. I see her. She's...she's amazing."

After cleaning her up, a crying baby in a linen blanket arrived to us. A baby girl, a precious baby girl.

"Congratulations," the nurse said with a smile as she placed her in River's arms. Pure joy was seen in her eyes and face. I knew what she felt, the feeling of it being truly yours. You made this human, you made it breath, you brought it life, you created everything from the heart to the tiny rice like fingernails, and now, it was in your arms. A life that you are in control of. A life to shape.

It's like a small glimpse into the future. You can see everything in their eyes and face and know, your child is going to be great, marvelous, stupendous. Your utter pride and joy.

"You were right."

"What?"

"You had a feeling it was going to be a girl."

I laughed. "I'm a Doctor, sweetie. I know everything. And I know," my finger stroked her soft cheek, "She's going to be safe."

River smiled as our baby girl yawned and her small arm escaped her blanket. My finger touched her tiny hand and instantly like an instinct, she grabbed it like she was holding on for dear life.

"Courtney," said River.

"Hm?"

"Courtney. Her name. You don't like it?"

"No, of course not," I peered in our little girl's eyes, "It's perfect."

Soon, Courtney was in my arms. The smell of an infant surrounded me and the lightness made me realize again how precious she truly is. Oh how I missed holding a child.

"Hello, Courtney. I'm the Doctor. But you can call me dad," I softly remarked, smiling.

And within those next moments, my girl opened her green eyes and looked at me in wonder, revealing the adventures we will have with her.
