 You remember the first time you met Sherlock Holmes. You were new at your school, and didn't know anyone. You were a shy kid, and it took you time to make friends.

 After a couple of weeks, you had noticed there was one boy in your class who was always by himself. He hardly ever talked to anyone, and none of the other kids ever seemed to want to spend time with him. Yet he seemed like he was a great student, and you never heard any teacher complain about him.

 The boy always sat by himself during lunch, usually reading or writing something down. You knew now that his name is Sherlock. It was an odd name, you thought, one you had never had before.

 You sat down next to him one day. "Is it all right if I join you?"

 He didn't say anything, and didn't even look up at you, but gave you a small nod you assumed was a yes.

 "I'm Y/N," you said.

 "I know," he replied. "You've been here a few weeks, so you must know I'm Sherlock Holmes."

 You nodded. "I know who everybody is. I've just been having a hard time making friends, I guess."

 "Well, don't feel bad," he said. "I've been here longer than you, and I don't have any friends."

 From that day on, the two spent always spent lunch sitting together. Whenever you sat down, he never protested. You would spend time together outside school, too. The two of you would work on homework together, or he would tell something about science or detective work.

 After meeting Sherlock, you never made many other friends during those years. You spent a lot of time with him, and he could be a lot to handle. But he was so different from everyone else, and there was something about him that fascinated you.

 But then you both became adults, and you went off to a university. Those times ended, and you lost touch with Sherlock for a long time before a chance meeting.

~~~~~~
 You are now a doctor, and have just begun working at St. Bartholomew's. When you began here, you had no idea this was the same hospital Sherlock Holmes hung around.
 You run into him in the hallway by chance. You begin to apologize, but then you see his face, and see the boy you used to be friends with.
 "Sherlock."
 He stares at you, momentarily stunned. "Y/N."
 "Wow," you say after staring at him for a few seconds. "You haven't changed much."
 "Neither have you," he says. "You work here now?"
 You nod. "I'm a doctor. What about you?"
 "No, I don't work here. I spend my time in the lab and the morgue."
 "That does sound like you." You shake your head. "You know, it's been too long. I'm working now, but do you want to meet up later, catch up on everything?"
 He nods. "Of course. I would like that."
 "Okay." You smile. "I have to get back to work, so I'll see you soon."
 Your smile stays after you've walked away. You've never quite forgotten the crush you had on him.
~~~~~~

 "Almost done?" Sherlock asks, knocking on the door to your office.

 "Yeah, just a minute. I'm not late, am I?"

 "No. You know how I am about time, so that's the first thing I would have said."

 "Of course it would be." You give him a kiss. "Let's get out of here."

 "You know, I've been thinking about the odds of us reconnecting the way we did last year," he says as you walk down the hall together. "Just running into each other like that."

 "And how likely was it?" you ask.

 "Very unlikely. Probably one in millions."

 "Then I think it must have been fate," you say, "Whether you believe in fate or not."

 And now, walking hand-in-hand with Sherlock, you feel like this really must have been fate.
