Your day has been terrible. There's really no other way to put it. It's just been one disaster after another, and you can't wait for it to be over.
So, you're in for a surprise when, after a very long and tiring day, you arrive at your house to see someone sitting on your front steps.
"Tommy? What are you doing here?" you ask.
"Waiting for you to get home," he replies, getting up off the steps. "I know you're probably kind of tired since you were working, but I thought maybe, if you're up for it-"
"I'm not up for it," you cut in.
"Oh. Okay. Uh, well, can I come inside, then?"
"I guess so," you say with a sigh. You head up the steps to unlock the door, and drop your keys. "Great."
"Here, let me." Tommy grabs the keys and unlocks the front door.
"How do you know which key is my house key?" you ask.
"Because I've been here before, and you only have a few keys." He holds the door open for you. "Home, sweet home."
"Thanks." You put your things down and sit down on the sofa. "I'm sorry. You're being nice, and I must seem so grouchy."
"No, it wasn't very considerate of me to think you would just be up for going out," Tommy says. "So, let's hear it. What kind of day have you had?"
"Not one I want to talk about," you answer.
"Oh." He sits down next to you. "I get it. I've had plenty of days like that. But you know what? The day after always seems a little bit better."
"So, you're saying tomorrow's gonna be a better day?"
"Exactly."
You nod. "This is why you're one of my favorite people, you know. I feel a little better now that you're here."
He smiles. "Glad I could help. So, should I go or..."
"Yeah, you probably should," you say. "Before you get ensnared into whatever web of darkness I have going on today."
"So, is it all right if I come back tomorrow?" he asks, standing in the doorway.
"Of course. My day will definitely be better if you do come."
You both smile, and you lean over to kiss him.
"Yeah," you say after the kiss. "You probably get out of here before you get ensnared in all that, too."
"All right, I'm going. But I will return."
Still smiling, you reply, "Oh, I'm counting on that."
