You go up to the rooftop one evening by yourself for some fresh air. The performance will be starting soon, and you need a minute by yourself.

In performances, you're usually somewhere in the chorus, or playing some very small part without many lines. It frustrates you that you can't manage to get yourself any larger roles in anything. You like to think you have a nice singing voice, and you practice every day to make sure you don't sound bad. But then again, one rarely gets a chance to star in an opera, so it can't come easily.

You hum to yourself as you stand on the rooftop, looking out at Paris below you. It's actually a beautiful sight.

Behind you, you think you hear what sounds like footsteps. You turn around, but you don't see anyone else out here.

"Is there someone here?" you ask.

"There is," you hear, spoken in a very soft voice. It sounds like it's coming from towards the far end of the rooftop, in the shadows. You step closer, but the voice says sharply, "No further, I beg you! It is better you don't see me."

"Who are you, then?" you ask.

"It is better you don't know exactly who I am. All you have to know is that I am the ghost who haunts this opera house."

"The Opera Ghost? I didn't think any of that was true."

"Ah, but it is," the voice replies. "And I know exactly who you are, Mademoiselle/Monsieur Y/L/N. I know what it is you desire."

You take a step back. "What would that be?"

"Why, to have a chance to lead the stage, of course. I can help you with that, you know."

"If you a ghost, how can you expect to help with that?" you ask. "How would you even do it?"

"Well, I am not only the Opera Ghost. I am also a master of music. I can teach you, help you have a even better voice than you already have. They will have to notice you then."

You don't know what to say from such an offer. Singing lessons from a supposed spirit? How do you know it's even a ghost?

"And would you want something in return?" you ask.

"There is something I would like you to do for me. Watch everything and everyone in the opera house very closely. Tell me of all the things you see and hear."

"You want me to spy for you, then."

"In a way. Will you accept my offer?"

You nod, staring into the shadows. "Very well. I will accept this in the hope that you mean what you say, whoever you are. If you will excuse me now, I have a performance to get to."

You get off the rooftop as quickly as you can. The Opera Ghost. You really did think it was just a story. Now you have singing lessons with him. At least you think it's a him, since it sounded like a man.

You remember what he told you, and find yourself paying very close attention to everything and everyone around you that night, in case you find something to report.
