Astrid's P.O.V

Night had finally arrived and there was no chance that I was going to get an ounce of sleep. I sat up top of the roof of my house staring at the stars that glittered in the sky after a whole week of gloomy clouds shielding them from us. Many were larger and outshined the little ones that were faded in the background but the moon outstood them all. It hung between the stars like a vertical smile. I twirled a small knife in my hands before piercing the wood with it's sharp tip.  I scratched some words into the wood and stared at them once I had finished. They made a smile tug at the corners of my mouth and they made my eyes soften. I ran a hand over them, feeling the groves in the wood that the knife had made to construct the letters that constructed the words. And I smiled.

"It's beautiful isn't it?" Valka's voice sung behind me.

I twisted my body around and saw her standing with her head tilted up to the heavens. I softly patted a spot next to me and untwisted myself. She took her time before deciding to sit. Instead of looking over at her I turned the hilt of the knife slowly in my hands, studying the faded designs that my father had once carved in it years ago.

"Sometimes when I do have my few down times I would clime to the roof of the house once Stoick was asleep and snoring in bed and I'd just lay there in the darkness staring up at the heavens," Valka muttered in a hushed tone.

"Valka?" I asked.

"Yes."

"How do you know if your past loved ones are looking down at you from Valhalla?" I questioned facing her.

She smiled softly as a mother would to her daughter. She cast a hand up and pointed to the stars, "Do you see those stars that shine at their brightest?" she asked.

I tilted my head up and watched the ones she pointed out. "Yes," I replied.

"Those stars are only the people you have loved and lost in the past, when you see those few bright stars that could outshine the moon if they were bigger, they tell you that those who have left are watching you grow and mature, even during the light of day," Valka explained. "They continue to watch you grow even in Valhalla, they watch when you may laugh, they watch when you may cry, they watch when you are angry and they watch when you are in love.

So when I lay up on my roof at night, it brings me a sense of comfort and ease to know that while I'm looking up at the heavens my past loved ones are looking back down at me with smiles on their faces, because I know they're proud of what I have accomplished while they have been absent from Earth," Valka continued smiling.

I looked down at my hands. "Would my parents be proud of me Valka?" I asked suddenly unsure anymore.

Valka shifted over and grasped my hand only to hold it in her own warm ones which made me look up into her eyes that were filled with a motherly love she had never been able to give to her son. She smiled broadly at me, "Of course Astrid and you know why? because you are a strong and confident young woman who do only the things no one would dare to do."

She stood back up holding my hand on the top of her palm before leaning down and pressing a soft kiss on my forehead. Her smile shrunk but this one was soft, kind and more loving then I had ever seen a mother give. She draped her other hand over the top of mine and shook it a little. "I believe in you Astrid and your parents do to...so do what not even the Chief hasn't accomplished out of fear and get my boy back, bring him home," she asked and dropped my hand gently, leaving into the night.

I looked up at the stars where two bright ones shone madly next to each other. I nodded my head but with a smile. "I promise Valka, I'll bring Hiccup back...I'll bring him home," I whispered looking down at the newly carved words on my roof that said something I couldn't say outloud:

I love Hiccup Hoddock
