I am so sorry for how long this took! I really loved writing this one though and I hope you like it!

Also I want to say that I am from America, so I will use the American school system and it's probably different in other places. I'm sorry if your school doesn't do it this way. *

The blaring of my 5:45 AM alarm jerked me awake in my bed from the nice sleep I was having. Groaning, I slipped out of bed to get ready for my school day. I cursed whoever's idea it was to make high school start so early.

I took half an hour to get ready and rush out to the front door where I would wait for my best friend to pick me up. He didn't have a car, but he still walked the extra 3 blocks to come to my house and walk with me to school. He was always selfless like that- maybe that's why I've had the biggest crush on him for so long.

"Hey," he said as he approached my front door right as I stepped out of it. He had a zip-lock bag full of warm pancakes in his hand, and was holding them out for me. "My mum made pancakes and I thought you might want some, since you always forget to eat breakfast."

I took the bag from him and adjusted the strap of my backpack as I walked down the steps. "I don't forget. I just hate eating so early. But I'll gladly take these since I know they're so good." I popped open the bag, handing one of the three pancakes to Newt and taking a bite out of another.

Our walk to school was a little over a mile, so we left extremely early in the morning so that we could make it to school while still being five minutes early. Our school was our main priority, and our straight A's were a clear sign of that. Newt and I shared most classes too- all honors or AP classes to bring up our GPA's.

As soon as the first bell rang for us to enter school, we rushed past the crowd of students to get to our lockers first, and of course they were right next to each other's.

"Do you think we'll need our Psych books?" Newt asked while trading a few notebooks from his bag for binders from the locker.

"Probably, but if Ms. (Y/Teacher/N) was nice, she'll move the test to tomorrow," I replied, wincing as the student to my left slammed their locker shut. Newt laughed at me but played it off as a cough. I pushed his shoulder as I walked past him and waited for him to join back at my side.

We were walking to our classroom when the group of our friends all came into view from the other direction. I grinned widely noticing Teresa's hand linked with Thomas's other one. Teresa had had a crush on Thomas for months now, and I'm guessing she finally worked up the nerve to ask him out.

"When did this happen, Tommy?" Newt chuckled when he saw their hands too. Teresa blushed and quickly left Thomas to explain to me the story.

"Well after our date last night, he asked me if I wanted to make it official and I said yes!" We grabbed each others hands and squealed happily before coughing it off and pretending it didn't happen. We had never done that before, but we assumed it was only fitting since she finally got the boyfriend she's been wanting.

"So," she added with a hint in her tone, "when are you and Newt gonna start going out?"

I stared up at her shocked before stuttering out inaudible words. "Wh-what? Me- me and N-newt? No, no, no, there's- we're just... there's nothing." Teresa laughed at my excuse for an answer and glanced back at the boys who were all laughing over something silly that must have happened this week.

"Oh come on. You two have been best friends for years, practically are glued at the hip, and you both look at each other like he's the sun in the sky," she dreamily gazed off with her hands pressed against her chest.

"So you want me to squint at him?" She hit my shoulder, obviously not finding humor in the joke that I was laughing about.

"I'm being serious!" She whined.

"And so am I," I said. "Newt doesn't see me that way and I'm not gonna risk losing him over stupid feelings."

"They're not stupid, (Y/N). You deserve to have a nice boyfriend for once. You know, I've never actually seen you with a boyfriend," she pondered with her finger pressed to her chin.

"That's because I've never had one. They're a waste of time and energy and when it doesn't work out, it gets messy. I can't have messy in my life." She groaned at my answer but decided for now to give it a rest.

Newt suddenly appeared at my side with his hand held out for mine. "Ready for class?" I slipped my hand in his and said a quick goodbye to the rest of our friends since none of them were in our first period with us.

"What were you and Teresa squealing about?" He asked.

"Girl stuff. What were you and the boys talking about?" I replied.

He shrugged. "Boy stuff."

We went through the next five classes before lunch and only one of them was spent without Newt, thankfully. He was with me during our last class so he walked with me towards the cafeteria where our other friends had already found our usual table. It was hidden in the back corner where none of the teachers patrolling the lunch room could catch us, since last year we ended up spending most of our lunches in detention because of it.

"Will you help me with my math homework?" Newt asked with a mouth full of a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. I nodded while pulling out my notes from my backpack. He did the same, while swallowing the rest of his sandwich and giving me the other half to eat.

Newt and I had our identical math papers sitting side by side as we compared the answers that we had already done. We only had one problem that we have mixed up but we quickly redid the problem and found Newt was right.

"My brain hurts from all this math work. I'm tired of reading numbers," I groaned while setting my head on top of the table.

"Love, why don't we take a break? You can come over and we can finish this after school." I thanked Newt while packing away my school supplies.

"Hey (Y/N)?" A boy from my science class said as he ran over to our table.

"Uh, yeah, what's up?" I said while spinning around to face him.

"I'm failing science and I need some help. Do you think you could tutor me?" He asked. He was never the smartest kid, everyone in the school practically knew it. He spent most of his time at every sport event the school offered, and when he wasn't there, he was hanging with his friends doing basically everything and anything they knew they weren't supposed to. I guess you could call him the 'bad boy' of my high school.

Before I could answer, Newt shouted an answer for me.

"I'll do it!" Everyone at our table- and the few tables around us- turned to Newt, who's cheeks were already filling with red. "I mean, (Y/N)'s too busy with her other classes but I'm not. I could tutor you so that (Y/N) wouldn't fall behind."

"Yeah, umm, no thanks, Newt is it?" Dakota said while rolling his eyes at Newt. "I'm sure (Y/N)'s not too busy to help me get a passing grade. Right (Y/N)?" Both boys turned their heads to me with equally needing faces- they both wanted an answer but I could only please one.

"I'm sorry Dakota but I'm too busy. But Newt has a high grade than me so he could help you out a lot better." Dakota clenched his jaw but put on a fake smile.

"No, that's alright. I'll find someone else." Dakota turned and walked off towards his table of friends. The rest of our friends at the table started bursting out laughing.

"Wow, if I didn't say any better," Minho began, smirking as glanced between Newt and I, "Newt was-"

"Looking out for (Y/N)!" Newt shouted beside me while cutting off Minho. "I was just looking out for you. He's not the best kinda guy and- and I know that he wasn't asking you because he needed help, but because-" Newt was rambling now, so I put my hand over his and calming quieted him.

"Hey, it's alright. Thank you. You did the rejecting for me." He smiled and flipped his hand over so that mine was sitting inside his. Butterflies filled my stomach as he brushed his thumb over my knuckles.

When the bell rang ending lunch, Newt grabbed my trash for me and tossed it before placing himself back at my side. We started a conversation as we walked to our next class together. We didn't have the same class, but Newt would walk me to the door everyday.

"You know you don't have to do this for me. It's out of your way," I said as we stood outside my classroom door.

He shrugged. "I want to. I know how you hate walking alone and I'm happy to do it," he said shyly, looking down at his feet. I wrapped my arms around his neck and pulled him into a tight hug. This wasn't unusual for us, but for some reason this one was different. It felt more intimate than the others.

"I'll see you after class so we can go to last period together," I said pulling back from the hug. He smiled and said, "of course," before turning to go back down the hall to his class.

-----

I smiled as I exited my classroom to see Newt leaning against the wall across from the door. Sharing bright smiles, I linked my arm through his as we started our walk with mindless conversation.

We entered our final class and took our assigned seats in the back corner of the room. We pulled out our work and began working on our assignment for that day. All during class, however, I noticed Newt sneaking not so subtle glances towards me. It was halfway during class that he finally spoke up.

"Hey, (Y/N)?" He asked in a hushed tone so that no one around us heard even though there was a dull roar spread across the room from other students talking.

"Mhmm?" I hummed while continuing to write down my answers.

He cleared his throat. "Would you.. if i-it's not... umm, would you like to go out, with me?"

Shocked at the sudden question, I set down my pen and looked up at Newt. His cheeks were fiery red and his normal smile was filled with worry. Millions of thoughts raced around my head, but the longer I took to answer seemed like it would make his head explode.

"I would love to go on a date with you, Newt." I bit my lip to hide the grin taking over my face, and turned my head back to the paper to hide the blush on my cheeks.

Newt seemed to gasp at my answer. "Really? I-I mean, okay. Thank you." He made a small gesture in his seat before picking his pen up to continue working. Neither of us got any more work done, thanks to the happy thoughts filling our brains, and the goofy grins covering our faces.
