"Please be safe, love," Newt said like he did everyday before I entered the maze. We stood outside the entrance waiting for the doors to open."I always am. I promise I'll come back to you," I repeated the words I said every morning. He never wanted me to be a runner after the fall but he knew it was something I was good at so he didn't fight me on it.
"You better," he sighed and pulled me tight into his chest.
He brushed his fingers through my hair as I played with the strap across his chest. He kisses the top of my head when Minho ran by.
He spun around so he could jog backwards. "Don't worry Newtie. I'll bring her back like I do everyday."
"I know. I know," Newt mumbled kissed my forehead. I then pulled his neck down so our lips could touch like they did a hundred times a day. If it wasn't obvious, we were head over heels in love.
"I'll see you later, my love," I said pecking his nose. "I'm coming back to you."
"Good luck, love." With that, the familiar grinding of metal and shaking of the ground pulled us apart. I ran to Minho and jokingly slapped her shoulder.
"Race ya," he offered with a sly smirk.
I nodded and hit his chest before taking off. "Too slow!" I teased entering the dark maze, leaving behind the comfort and safety of the glade.
Newt's POV
"Too slow!" (Y/N) called as she crossed the border into the maze. It hurt knowing she went into the griever infested maze alone everyday. But it hurt more knowing I couldn't be in there with her, protecting her, because of a selfish mistake I made the first year in the glade.
She repeatedly told me things like 'I'm glad you're with me', 'you make me truly happy', and 'I needed to make sure you're okay' just to keep me from going as dark as I was. She was the light for me here in the glade and everyone knew it too. They could see from the moment (Y/N) and I got together that I've become a happier and more lively person.
But like every person, she breaks. I've helped me her as many times than she's helped me and I feel that's how it should be. We're each here to keep each other strong and going. I wouldn't want it any other way.
Only a few hours went by until I happened to see a boy point towards the maze. My stomach lurched thinking something was wrong with (Y/N). I ran into the view of the maze and looked inside.
(Y/N)'s arm was draped over Minho's shoulders and his hand on her waist. Her left leg was dragging behind her as her face curled in pain. Of course I thought of the worst; what if a griever broke her leg? What if it stung her? What if she'll never walk again? What if she'll have a limp like me? What if-
I tore myself from my thoughts and ran towards the doors. I impatiently waited for them to cross into the glade so I could see if she was fine. Yes I was an ex-runner but that still meant I was never allowed in the maze.
She looked at me with a worried look before I scooped her into my arms. She whined a little as I turned to Minho knowing she wasn't gonna answer while she curled her face into my neck.
"What happened?" I asked looking at her dirt stained cheek and scraped collarbone.
"We were running and she twisted her ankle on something and fell on her face. She couldn't walk on the leg and needed help back," Minho explained with his hands on his hips to catch his breath.
"Min I'm sorry you had to carry me back but I'm fine. I'm not hurt at all," (Y/N) said making me roll my eyes. She never wanted anyone to worry about her. She wanted to look tough and strong so no one would worry about her but she was all I worried about.
"Thanks Minho," I said making (Y/N) wrap her arms around my neck and twist into me. She was enjoying this more than being in pain.
"I'm going back in. Just help her." Minho turned and jogged back into the maze before sprinting down the halls. I turned and walked her through the glade towards the med huts.
"Newtie, I'm fine. It-it doesn't even hurt that bad," she said squinting her eyes shut from the pain. When I didn't reply but answered with a sly smile, she continued. "Newtiiiiie."
She huffed in defeat and flipped her back so she had view of the glade upside down. I just smile down at my girlfriend knowing how quirky she was especially when she was in pain. She wanted to play it off as if it didn't hurt which only made me laugh at her. She truly was something different.
"Okay I lied, baby," she added as we approached the hut. "It hurts. A lot."
"I know, love. Only a few more seconds baby girl," I replied noticing Alby run towards us. (Y/N) giggled, I assumed from seeing Alby upside down.
I entered the huts and called for Clint who immediately appeared beside me. He instructed me to put her in the room to my left and set her gently on the bed.
"What happened?" Clint and Alby said at the same time.
"She twisted her ankle in the maze and needed Minho to carry her back," I explained standing beside her. Clint untied her shoe and pulled it off, making (Y/N) hiss and squeeze the bed.
"No grievers?" Alby asked directly to (Y/N). She shook her head no and watched Clint work intently. She was nervous, I could tell, so I took her right hand and squeezed it for comfort. I was in here often with small injuries and she always stood beside me squeezing my hand.
"Good that. So Minho's still running?" I nodded to answer his question and he replied with 'good that' again.
"It's just dislocated. I can pop it back into place and then treat the cut on you chest," Clint instructed while kneeling in front of (Y/N).
"Oh no, not again," she mumbled. She had dislocated many things before: each of her ankles, her wrist, and three of her fingers once from a fight with Gally. She knew what this pain felt like and wasn't prepared.
"You can do it, love. Just look at me," I said stepping closer. She then pointed to the ground and had me kneel beside the bed. She wrapped her arms around my neck and closed her eyes.
"Do it," she breathed and buried her head in my neck. All this was to mask the pain but we all knew it was inevitable.
"On three," Clint said placing his hand on (Y/N)'s ankle. "Three." He jerked her leg to the left making her yelp and grip onto me. She panted in my neck before her tears moistened my shoulder.
"What the bloody hell happened to two and one?" I asked rubbing her back.
"She was expecting it. That just makes it hurt more," Clint explained. "Sorry." He took a pause while looking for his supplies. "I can clean her wound now."
(Y/N) sat up and pulled her shirt over her head and set it in her lap. She set her back on the cot and laced our fingers together. I knew she was holding back more tears while she bit her lip. She never wanted to seem hurt or weak unless she broke. That's just how it was being the only girl in a glade of boys.
"Thank you," she breathed to me as Clint came over with the tools to help her. He first dampened a towel with the alcohol before placing it on the fist sized scrapes covering her right collar bone. She hissed when it came in contact with the cuts and tugged on my the cloth of my hoodie.
"Sorry," she said after releasing the fabric.
It took only a few minutes for Clint to finish saying they just needed time to heal. He said she could rest in here since she wouldn't run anymore today which made her a little happy. We never had days off and so even though she was hurt, she was getting the afternoon off.
When Clint left, it because just her and I sitting together in silence. Not an awkward silence. Just us two falling deeper in love while laying here.
"Come here," she muttered and opened her arms for me. I chuckled and climbed onto the cot. She wrapped her arms around me and pulled us so we each fit sideways on the small cot. She sighed of relief, I'm guessing when we found a soft spot tangled together.
"I love you. Thanks for not giving up on me," she whispered pecking a kiss to my neck. I smiled.
"Always. I love you too baby girl." She was a runner and I had to get over that. I had to get over the fact that the maze was dangerous and could at any day take her from me. But I'll be damned if I spend one day not protecting her to the best of my ability, even it means simply carrying her when she's hurt.
