Everyone listened close as Thomas explained to them what happened last night.
"While we were looking for Minho we got quite lost. I didn't know where we were going, let alone Jade. As we were looking I found this broken wall of some sort. There were broken parts, but we could climb them and they went up to a second level. As we got up there, there was a tunnel going through the wall and it was VERY dark." He stopped to eat some of his food and I rubbed his hand. He was getting to the hard part of the story. "Uhm..." His voice was shaky.
"Right, everyone done?" Alby yelled. I threw my head round.
"Get out!" Gally yelled, throwing his hands back behind him, gesturing everyone to leave. I rolled my eyes and Hannah leaned into Thomas.
"Finish off later. Just give yourself some time." She said. This is why we're best friends. She so understanding. We all stood up and left. I pulled Thomas to round the back of the canteen when everyone had gone.
"Hey... You okay?" He looked at his feet.
"Yeah... I just..." He sighed deeply. "How's your back?"
"Sore." I said softly. He shook his head.
"It's all my fault, I'm so sorry. I'm the stupidest person ever." He threw his hands on the air and turned away from me. I wrapped my arms around him and nuzzled into his shoulder.
"It's not your fault. Don't worry." I turned him round and gave him a big, deep hug. "Listen, you didn't mean to. It was my fault Thomas. I-"
"No." He cut me off and his eyes went bloodshot. "It's my fault." I opened my mouth but he stopped me again. "I let go..." I swallowed hard and readied my answer.
"You were only trying to protect me but you had to think of yourself as well, Thomas it's fine." I told him sternly. "You had no other choice, it was either up or down and down was the only SAFE way."
"You almost broke you back!" He yelled. "If you had then you wouldn't have even been walking." He began to walk away.
"But I didn't did I! I'm here. I'm alive. I'm okay, Thomas. That's enough." I grabbed his shoulders and held him in place. He just looked in my eyes then pushed past me. "Thomas..." I breathed, but he didn't look back. I went to the homestead and locked myself in my room. Why was he being such an arse?
Newt's POV.
Me and Sean went over to the gardens to carry on with our work.
"Oh no!" He groaned.
"What've you done." I chuckled in response.
"The shucking tomatoes haven't been thingyed properly and they've been eaten!"
"Thingyed?" I said walking over.
"Yeah! Look." He picked up one of the dead plants. Tomatoes were one of the most used fruits in The Glade and we rarely got them seeds when the box came up.
"Crap... Who sorted the tomatoes!" I yelled. Adam turned his head and didn't look at me. "Adam?" I moved over to him.
"I'm sorry... It... It was an accident..."
"I don't care! You know how important our job is! If we don't stick to it, the. No one eats. Want us all to starve?" He look at his feet sheepishly.
"I didn't mean to-" he stopped himself and turned back to weaving the new baskets. Everyone was staring but that's what happens when things get mucked up. Adam was the new greenie, now Jade had been here a month already. Personally I didn't like him but he was better at gardening than any of the other professions. Actually no. Gardening was just the one that he was the least bad at. He slacked off work and didn't listen. Did not like him one bit, and I knew he disliked me back. Hannah walked past carrying some boxes towards the slicers workplace and I gave her a wave. Adam looked up and smiled at her as she waved back to me. I snarled him and went back to work. 'He better not try anything.' I thought. Later on in the day we all gathered again at the canteen for dinner. Thomas was the first there.
"Hey bud. You okay?" I quietly greeted. He nodded. I noticed he hadn't touched his food again and it had gotten cold. "Why aren't you eating?" I asked.
"I can't."
"Why not?"
"Because... I could've killed her..." I didn't understand what he was saying.
"Who?" He took his time to answer, his face turned to mine.
"Jade... I let go... I let go of her, and she fell." He'd turned his head forward again and his expression was blank.
"Thomas, what happened?" I asked, daintily.
"I lead her straight to a greivers home. It jumped out of the dark hole and attacked both of us. I was pushed back towards the edge. I we didn't know how high it was and... It pushed her off. I reached down and grabbed her hand but I couldn't pull her up. The greiver was literally on top of me. I had no choice. She had tears pouring down her face but still I let go. She fell... So did I." I couldn't register what he was saying, he'd dropped Jade off the edge of a wall. He was right, she could've died. They both could've. I almost did...
