Chapter 23: "Run!"

Hannah's POV.

We spent most of the day in Newt's room, trying to recall as many memories as possible. Newt opened up a lot of his secrets to me while we where there. I didn't ask him to, he said he just felt comfortable enough to share them with me. I was privileged. We left at around Tea time. I wanted something to eat and I needed to stretch my leg. The swelling had gone down loads and I got to keep the bandana. Or more or less, take it back... When we go to the canteen I heard loads of people talking about something that was going to happen tomorrow. I found Winston and Lee. They were sitting right in the middle talking about tomorrow's runners. It was just going to be Thomas and Minho again? Or it was supposed to be. Newt went and got me my food while I sat down with them and got the info in what was happening.

"Didn't you hear?" Lee asked.

"No? What, tell me now! Tell me now!" I said slapping his arm.

"Greenie has been accepted into the running community." Winston answered.

"What? Jade? A runner!" I scoffed. Newt walked over and heard what I said. He sat next to Winston and joined the conversation.

"Wait, seriously? Greenie is a runner?" We all nodded. "Sorry, but I don't think she has the chops."

"It's to soon I recon." Lee said, with a mouth full of fruit. "Bets on how long?"

"3 days." Was Winston's guess.

"I give her one." Said Newt.

"Youse are being a bit harsh." Lee commented.

"Come on Lee, I don't think she'll last long? She isn't the fastest person around here." I said.

"Yeah, but if she slows down, Thomas will definitely offer to carry her." Chuckled Newt, as they walked behind us. We all laughed as they sat on the end of our table.

"What you guys laughing at?" Jade asked.

"Nothing." We all said at the same time, exchanging looks and quiet, sneaky sniggers. It got to the end of lunch and people were getting ready to go back to work. I wanted to talk to Gally. Not about anything important, just to have a 'friendly' conversation. Then again, I didn't expect a polite response.

"Afternoon." I said loudly, walking over towards the builders.

"Hi." He replied blankly.

"Gosh Gally, it's great to see you too. Oh really? My day has been quite good so far, yeah thanks a lot for asking." I said overly sarcastic.

"Well I would've asked that, but you kinda didn't let me." He throw back. Well this was off to a good start.

"Need any help?" I said finally.

"No, what can you do anyway." He didn't look at me, just a wall he was tying together with twigs and bamboo. I stood there with my hands on my hips. I didn't like it when the boys made me look weaker because I was a girl. They didn't know what I was capable of. Yet...

"Well for starters, your doing this all wrong." I picked the wall up off the floor as Alec, the tallest builder, grabbed my hand.

"What are you doing? We need to finish that on the floor." He said whilst trying to pull it off me. I slapped his wrist and he snatched his arm back.

"Are you going to let me finish?"

"Go ahed, let HER do it on her own. That job is gonna take 3 days blondie, let's see you try." Gally snarled. I gave him a dirty look and just shunned him.

"First of all, your tying this all wrong." I pulled out one of the strings and the whole wall fell to pieces.

"Oh well done einestin!" Yelled Alec.
