"I'm not doing it."

"Scolipedeeeee!"

"NO. No, I'm not doing it and you can't make me and there's no way that you could ever make me so stop."

"You're being a big baby, Scolipede! Come on, it's only for a few minutes and it's really important to me!" You whine and tug on his hand, and despite the multiple rounds of ringing protest, you can tell he's hesitating on the matter. However, he goes rigid again at the thought of entering the building in front of you. "Okay, look, I know you have no interest in getting bombarded again, and I know this is essentially leading the sheep to the slaughter, but I don't know how long she has left, Scolipede."

The desperation in your voice cracks him, and despite his previously sound argument, he finds himself taking begrudging steps into the senior center in front of you, dragging you behind him as scowls. "Yeah, Yeah, I get it. So just... don't look so sad, okay?" You give him a gentle smile and squeeze his hand in gratitude. He was doing this for you, even if he really didn't have any desire to be within a thousand foot radius of this place.

You sign in at the front desk at the senior center and begin making your way briskly down the hall. Your Pokemon is already getting a few interested looks from the ladies playing bingo in the recreation room, so you scurry by as quickly as possible. The fear and unease in his eyes was indescribable, and if it wasn't such a hard thing for him to do, you might have laughed. Nothing to mellow out a huge, rough and tumble man like a couple of four foot six elderly women.

Finally, you reach a door marked with your last name and knock softly on the wood. A small voice sounds from the other side of it and you crack it open and take wary steps into the room where your grandmother resides. An old, graying Patrat lies curled up next to her on her bed, and she sends the two of you a loving grin as you come into view. "Hey Grannie, we've come to see you. I brought um... I brought the guy I was telling you about."

Your grandma is a frail women, her skin papery and fragile, like it might crumble from a touch. She doesn't move around much now a days, but she's just as lively in spirit now as she was when she was your age. You take a seat by her bed, and Scolipede, humbled by this paternal presence, obediently follows suit. "Oh, wow _______, you didn't tell me he was a real looker! Oh, if only I was seventy years younger!"

You strike up a conversation with her, and Scolipede sits silent at your side, quiet, distant, unlike usual. How could you be so brave, how could you face her? Everything about the old lady sitting in front of him- her physical appearance, the way she sounded, the jerky moves she made, even her smell- they all screamed death. You weren't enough of an idiot to not recognize even one of these signs, so how could you talk to this woman like normal? The woman in front of the two of you, she was dying. There wasn't any doubt about that.

"Scolipede, was it? You used to be a Pokemon? How exotic!" Your boyfriend is snapped back into reality when he's called, and he grunts and nods his head in response. "A real charmer 'eh _______? I hope he's a little more talkative when he's alone with you, at least!" You laugh and nod your head.

"Yeah, Scolipede's a little stubborn, and he likes teasing me, but he's a good guy Grannie. I really love him." Both of your faces turn a shade darker and he clears his throat in embarrassment. "A-Anyway, how's your plan to seduce Mr. Johnson down the hall? Got any dates yet?" Your grandma laughs and starts confiding in you about all the awkward attempts she's made at gaining fair Mr. Johnson's affections, and you can't stop your laughter.

Then she turns back to address the man by your side. "Hey, Scolipede, can I ask for a favor?" Grandma hums out and he nods his head. "Take care of her please, someone needs to look after this clutz of a granddaughter when I'm not around to clean up her messes anymore." He freezes as you begin to whine about her statement. Because suddenly, he see's it. Why this visit was so important to you, why he needed to come. You wanted him to meet the other most important person in your world, and to assure her that you would be okay. Because she meant the universe to you, and you were going to lose her.

"Yes-!" He clenches his fist in the fabric of his pants and looks down at the ground, staring hard and sharp. "I-I can promise... To do at least that. She's kinda... kinda really important to me, so..." He can't seems to gather his words, so you touch him gently on the shoulder and mutter a thank you under your breath. And when he looks up at her, he wants to punch a wall.

"Thank you, son." You only stay for a little while longer, because the sun is setting and it's about time for you to be on your way. You bid farewell to the woman who raised you, promising to check back in and visit again in another couple of weeks, and promising to bring her some of the famous candy from the next town you were going to visit. You manage to escape the center without too much commotion from it's residents, and get outside in one piece.

You lean into Scolipede as you walk, and he holds you close. "I know. I know. I'm here." You can hear him mutter, you can see him say the words you needed most through the blur created by the many tears falling down your face.
