Lynn's POV

I paced quickly across the extensive foyer, clicking my heels onto the sleek marble beneath as I passed through the airy space decked with a glorious arched ceiling, intricately stained full length glass windows and an elegant spiral stairwell that led to the upper levels I had not been given a chance to explore.

Navigating through the maze of hallways on the ground level as directed by Charles' instructions in my head, I ultimately arrived at the said study to find all the mutant adults seated around a small rectangular meeting table.

"The queen is here," Raven unnecessarily announced when she spotted me stepping through the doors and I rolled my eyes at her, and her mockery, as I made my way towards Charles at the head once again, directly faced with Erik on the other end.

Charles eyed me as I excitedly walked in his direction and extended his hand, immediately pulling me into his lap when I came within his reach. Craning his neck up to me, his eager eyes pleaded for a kiss that I gladly granted to his lips as I had my arm around his shoulders and his firmly surrounding my waist.

I've missed you, he confessed to me as we broke away.

"Me too," I mouthed with a grin.

Charles took my hand and we locked our gazes for an unknown amount of time until Raven's voice, expectedly, interrupted my umpteenth examination of my husband's charming crystal blue eyes.

"Looking at each other isn't going to build your school, Xaviers," she claimed pretentiously and we both faced towards her, seeing her crossing her arms as she leaned back in her chair.

"You can't go a minute without doing that, can you?" Charles challenged in an amused tone.

"It's practically my job," she retorted and tilted her head cockily as she smirked.

Unequivocally, she finds joy and takes pride in poking fun at us.

Charles and I briefly laughed off her patronising reply as I reluctantly peeled myself off and settled into the vacant chair to his left that was deliberately left for me. Charles cleared his throat and straightened his posture, reverting to the solemn Professor X who was ready for business before he spoke.

"As you would have imagined, I want the academy up and running as soon as we can but with the current state of town, we are met with more than a couple of problems," Charles addressed in a somber tone as he intertwined his fingers on the table.

"I can contact the contractors," Hank volunteered.

"I know you can, Hank. But it's not safe for you to go out looking like that," Charles declined cheerlessly and sighed, instinctively rubbing his hand along his head in frustration.

"We're in the dawn of a new age. The potential destructive power of mutants has been raised too high a bar and it's sure to fuel new controversy and debate within the human community," Charles asserted with obvious uneasiness plaguing his fidgety frame that could not even be appeased with my touch as I held his hand in consolation.

"I don't want you to take any risks at a time like that. The last thing I need is to lose another good friend," Charles stressed pessimistically.

Undeniably, he was mourning over Alex as he strengthened his grip on my palm and pinched his nose bridge that centered his vexed face with his body tensed in distress.

"Charles, relax," I urged as I moved my hand to stroke his chest that was tightly clenched as he inhaled a deep breath.

He glimpsed briefly at me and mustered a fleeting smile before looking to the others at the table, albeit having no further dissertation to present them with. Silence dominated the atmosphere that reeked of newsprint and coated paperback, as did dilemma on our faces while we figured something out.
