Xavier's School, May 1983
Lynn's POV
Twelve months on, our lives remained gratefully undeterred. Everything was peaceful and well for us in Westchester. Charles and I focused all our energy on teaching that we soon found ourselves too occupied for that horrendous dream, albeit still taking precautionary measures on a daily basis.
While Charles verbally assured me that everything will be fine with regards to the nightmare I had a year ago, his actions did not quite match up.
Charles insisted that I carried a dose of mutant X serum with me wherever I went. He wanted me to protect myself, in the unlikely event that he could not, if he was ever in danger. Although I knew I would never leave him, especially not when his life was being threatened, I had it by my side nonetheless to allow him a peace of mind and of course, in case I had to save him if my life was the one on the brink.
As the period bell rung through the halls of the school, the droopy eyes of my dreary students shot wide open. Some packed their bags enthusiastically while others stared at me intently, waiting anxiously for me to say the magic words as I made my concluding remarks for the lesson.
"Class dismissed!" I finally announced.
I watched as each of them sprang up from their seats in pure delight. The roar of moving chairs and the rustle of little feet filled the room as they scrambled to leave.
"Goodbye, Lynn!" They yelled and waved back at me, suddenly energized, as they burst through the door and out to the playground.
Within seconds, the classroom was emptied, leaving me with a grid of neatly arranged desks and chairs. Even if they were not paying attention, it was comforting to know that our students were extremely well-mannered and incredibly courteous.
I chuckled and shook my head at the scene in front of me, amazed at myself for still finding it unbelievable despite this being the umpteenth time I have witnessed it. Kids will be kids, I consoled myself as I moved to dust away my scientific scribblings on the chalkboard. I took my time to clean up my things, knowing I still had plenty before having lunch with Charles, who still had one more period of Literature to go.
As I slowly made my way out to the hallway, I saw Jean coming towards me. She looked thoroughly annoyed and her mind was in an absolute frenzy.
"Hi, Lynn," she greeted monotonously, barely making eye contact as she brushed past me and I could literally feel her fuming.
She had long resigned to her solitary life in the school that she no longer took any of her classmates' distasteful remarks to heart. At least, she does not show it like that anymore. She was unusually mad today and I felt the responsibility to figure out why.
"What's wrong, Jean?" I asked as I reversed my chair in her direction to grab her wrist.
"Why are you so upset?" I investigated in concern.
"It's nothing," she mumbled to herself.
"You are telling me or I'm telling the Professor," I confronted firmly, knowing she much preferred the former.
"That boy in the foyer... He's so stupid it pisses me off!" She snapped in frustration.
"What boy?" I laughed, raising my brows at her and she immediately jumped to her own defence.
