Lynn's POV
After a long walk, we finally returned to our apartment.
I had just taken my shower and it was Raven's turn now. In my night gown, I took my seat in the middle of the couch of the living area, which doubled as a study for Charles and myself. I held a book open in my hand while having full view of Charles at his desk. He thinks I am reading but I was actually just watching him being buried into his books. He looked exceptionally captivating when he was focusing on his work.
A smile spreads across my face as I played back in my head how he had just held my hand the entire way as we walked back from 'The Eagle'. Those scenes just make me forget, temporarily, how hurtful his words at the bar had been.
The running water in the shower stops and I hear Raven drying off in the bathroom.
"Mutant and proud," she copies Amy's tone. "Mutant and proud?" I giggled to myself as she says it again with her mouth probably full of toothpaste. Charles lets out a sigh as he continues to write something and Raven spits out whatever it was in her mouth, seemingly in frustration. "If only," she breathed dejectedly.
She walks out of the bathroom that was to the right of Charles, stopping in her tracks as she neared his desk. I had my gaze on her as her blue form emerged through the door, wrapped in nothing but a bathrobe.
"Would you date me?" She asked Charles and it got me puzzled.
"Of course, I would. Any young man would be lucky to have you. You are stunning," he replied, almost without hesitation though not once looking up from his papers.
"Looking. Like. This," Raven reiterated, emphasizing each syllable and it breaks his concentration.
"Like..." He looks up at her from his thesis, blinking several times as if to have a better look at her. "What?" He pauses to think through her question again. "Blue?" He reconfirms in surprise and Raven could only roll her eyes.
"What about Lynn?" She asked, pointing in my direction as she turned towards me.
I was so close to throwing my book at her but managed to restrain myself, so as not to arouse any suspicion. I glared back at her, horribly stunned that she was being so direct about this now but she raises her eyebrows at me as if to say, You want to know.
In the corner of my eye, I saw Charles turn his head to face me. I looked into his eyes calmly, hiding my excitement but my heart was racing. I was full of hope that his answer would not disappoint me.
"You girls are my oldest friends," he tried to change the subject.
It did.
"We are your only friends," Raven replied sarcastically.
"Thank you for that!" Charles said in an amazed tone as we both let out a brief chuckle.
"Well?" Raven prompts again.
"I'm incapable of thinking of you girls that way. I feel, responsible for both of you. Anything else would just feel, wrong," Charles states as he stands from his desk, taking his notes and a pencil with him before making his way over to the couch.
I sighed subtly as his words sank into my head and pierced through my heart like they did earlier that evening.
"But what if you didn't know us?" Raven questioned again, unsatisfied with Charles' response.
He puts down his things on the side table and picks up his thesis from the same place before joining me on the couch. Of the two empty seats I had left, he had to take the smaller of the spaces that was to my right. He sat so close I could feel his body heat and smell the scent of his alluring cologne that still lingered on his shirt. He plants his pencil onto his ear, holding his thesis in one hand while bringing the other around me and resting it on the back of the couch.
"Unfortunately, I do know you. God, I don't know what has gotten into you lately!" He told Raven off with a frown on his face. "You're awfully concerned with your looks," he added before turning his utmost attention back to his thesis.
Immediately, Raven stomps off to our room, completely enraged by Charles' final statement.
Usually, I would gladly lie into his arms as he reads his thesis, imagining us being together and slowly falling asleep in his embrace. But today, I had been hurt enough to wake up from this dream that would never come true.
"Good night, Charles," I spoke softly under my breath, standing up from the couch and ready to follow Raven back to our room.
As I turned my back to leave, he reached out his arm from the back of the couch and grabbed my hand in his. He bends forward slightly while still sitting down, gently lifting my hand to his lips and kissing the back of it.
"Good night, Lynn," he said, his warm breath brushing against my skin as he looked up at me.
Perhaps on another day, I would give him a bright smile and let my fingers linger in his palm before reluctantly walking off to bed. But tonight, I shy away from his touch, retracting my hand forcefully from him after that kiss. I didn't like the way his gestures, albeit probably nothing more than gentlemanly, gave me hope.
The frown on his face and the slight tilt of his head told me that he was utterly confused by my action.
I hold my hands awkwardly in front of me and looked away, avoiding eye contact as I feel myself on the verge of breaking down. I wanted so much to apologize for being rude but I knew my voice would definitely give me away. I spun myself around, heading to my bedroom when he suddenly speaks again.
"Lynn, is something the matter? Are you alright?" He asked in concern and I almost hated it.
It makes me stop halfway across the room as tears started rolling from my eyes. Without turning back, I take a deep breath, trying to compose myself to answer him.
"I'm fine," I said firmly, hoping that my voice could hide the fact that I was crying.
Apparently, it was enough for him to not see through my lie.
