175. All that Glitters: Write about a shiny object.
This is a true story and I laughed so hard when it was told to me that I just had to fictionalize it.
So this guy Bill, right? He's been married to this woman named Cathy for a long time. They're the kind of comfortably married couple whose names are always linked together. You can't think of one without the other. In all those times, neither has ever lost their wedding ring. Except after thirty or so years of marriage, Bill finally does. He at some point realizes that his wedding ring is not on his finger where it's supposed to be.
That's a pretty important thing to lose, so they spend a long time searching for it. Weeks. They comb their whole house, his workplace, ask at stores and restaurants they had been at if it had been found there. Nothing. Eventually, they admitted defeat.
They ordered another wedding ring. Bill wore that thing for an entire year. It was a better ring than the original one, if to be better is to have more diamonds and be more expensive.
Then it's Spring. Cathy is taking something out to store in the garage. There's an open bag of mulch pushed against the wall. She is passing it when her eye happens to move over it and catches on something glint. It's a small flash, but she pauses and inspects what could be sparkling in her bad of mulch. Cathy bends down, picks it up and finds --
Bill's original wedding ring.
