143. Failure: Write about a time you failed at something. Did you try again or give up completely?

Once upon a time -- a time not so long ago as to be completely foreign but long enough ago as to be foreign -- once upon a time there was a woman.

She was a plain woman. Nothing about her was remarkable, except that she was made to be so.

This woman married her high school sweetheart when she was nineteen-years-old. She was not popular, but she had a modest, pretty wedding. She had a son and then another and then another. She was a woman who did her duty, and she was so busy doing her duty she didn't realize that someone had slacked off on his.

He cheated on her with her best friend, this husband of hers. And when she found out, she first confronted her friend. Her friend threatened to shoot her.

So she took her children and left her husband, because he had no regrets. He was free now; free of her control, free of her nagging. No children, no wife...

She was lost. They divorced. It was over. They gave up.

She came close to giving up on life too, but she had babies, and they needed her. She drudged by.

Years later, she met another man. He was strong and down-to-earth and he loved God and her. She liked him, and then she loved him. They married, and her boys had a father again. The two even had a child of their own: a boy. Then they decided to have yet another child, and so the couple went to China... and adopted me.
