"are you ever going to hit back?" Inside Wall Sina, two boys picked on a young (h/c) haired girl, (y/n) (l/n) . she didn't want to say anything back to them, couldn't say anything back, but that agitated them. one of the boys pulled at the collar of her sweater to get in her face.

"say something! quit standing there and hit us back!" she shook her head fiercely. the boy threw her into the brick wall and watched as she dropped, kicking her one last time and spitting on her before both walked away. the girl sat herself up, in pain and confused as to why she was treated so differently. she began to cry before she ran all the way home with dirt on her skirt and shoes. the sky slowly opened up and it started to rain.

(y/n) pushed open the front door to her house, sobbing loudly with large tears falling down her face as her mom turned around from the fire.

"mommy, I want to be able to f-fight back! why can't I do it? I'm so much smaller than the other kids b-but I'm the same as them! why are they so mean to me?" (y/n)'s mother stopped her cooking to run to her child's side, closing the front door and crouching down to hold (y/n). her mother grabbed a cloth and wiped the dirt and spit off (y/n)'s face.

"repay violence with kindness, remember? those kids only want to be seen by you." her mom soothed her by rubbing her wet hair down as she spoke (y/n).

"I saw them, mommy! I didn't make mean eyes at them, I really looked at them like you said to. I want to be able to look at them, I smile too. is it because I don't talk like the other girls?" (y/n)'s mother pulled away from her, looking her child in the eye. her mother smiled as she rubbed more dirt off (y/n)'s eyelashes.

"every child is different, but that does not mean you should use that word in an excluding way. remember this, your mommy loves you the way you are. you are no different than those girls. one day you will be able to fight back, just let time pass at its own pace. when you leave for the survey corps, there will be someone that will care for you even if others don't ." (y/n) nodded, hiccuping every once in a while.

"yes mommy."

"are you ever going to hit back?" Jean threw the older (h/c) girl down as they fought each other in the fields as soldiers of the Survey Corps. once again, she couldn't say anything back. she stood herself up, her hands covering her bruising body as Jean held nothing back.

"say something already! or what? are you mute?" (y/n) shook her head, trying to find anything to say back, but her mouth opened and nothing came out.

"horse face! leave (y/n) alone!" Eren stopped his spar as he ran over to stand in front of (y/n) as a way to protect her.

"why should I? she's been ignoring me this whole time!" (y/n) remembered what her mother had said years ago, about looking at the kids and how they wanted to be seen.

"I-I'm sorry. I wasn't ignoring y-you. are you mad because I didn't s-see you?" (y/n) stood behind Eren's back, talking over his shoulder at Jean, who's eyes widened before narrowing again.

"so you're blind now? what a joke!"

"n-no! that's not it. I was told I don't look at people, but t-through them. was I looking through you?" Eren flared as he listened to (y/n) reason with Jean. Jean was taken back by her words, his anger that flared calming down as he now felt the need to apologize instead of (y/n) doing so.

"(y/n)! you don't have to apologize to this asshole! he's just picking on you. come on, it's time to go inside anyway. " Eren gave Jean a look once more before turning around, grasping (y/n)'s wrist and gently pulling her inside. once inside, he started pulling her down halls to the girls' bunks.

"Eren, that hurts." Eren immediately let go of (y/n)'s wrist, seeing her (s/c) skin turning yellow as the process of bruising started.

"I'm sorry. are you hurt anywhere else? you're not bleeding are you?" he pushed open the door to the wide room and looked for a few towels to wet so he could put them on her bruises and clean the dirt off.

"I'm fine. y-you should go back to Mikasa and Armin so they don't worry." (y/n) ran her hand through her (h/c), (h/l) hair to shake the dirt out. she didn't care if it got on her bed as she sat down on it. Eren came back with wet towels and sat down next to her, wiping the dirt off her face with one towel and another was put on her wrist. (y/n) remembered her mother doing this for her when she was younger, the memory bringing tears to her eyes.

"did I hurt you?" he pulled the clothed away from her face. (y/n) shook her head and looked at Eren's concerned expression.

"no, I was just remembering my mom doing this for me when I was a child." Eren felt relieved at that, the feeling swelling when he saw a small smile on the otherwise melancholy girl's face.

"I remember my mom doing this for me as well. although it always came with her scolding me. " (y/n) quietly laughed, it was soft and airy, but it made Eren smile and eventually laugh as well.

"stay the way you are, even if that stupid Jean tells you otherwise. everyone else likes you too." (y/n) remembered her mother saying something like this as well. she nodded at Eren as he continued to clean her face.

"if you ever need help just tell me and I'll protect you! Mikasa will too, she looks at you like a younger sister." (y/n) nodded again, falling back into her memories completely as she thought about how she met Eren at the graduation, him saying words almost mirroring his previous statement.

Eren had gotten up to clean the towels off, leaving a nostalgic (y/n) sitting on the bed. still slightly lost in her memories, she knew in the back of her head she had yet to be able to fight back.

"I want to fight back..."

"but you did right? your kindness calmed Jean down. even if I'm thick headed, anyone else besides me can see that your kindness is your sharpest weapon. maybe not your kindness...your aura or something." (y/n) wanted to laugh, so she did. she laughed louder than before, but still just as airy. she sounded like she was enjoying herself. her eyes closed with the smile she had and her cheeks were red with mirth.

"my aura?" she opened her eyes again, her shoulders slowly stopped moving with laughter as she watched Eren realize what she asked. he walked up to her, pushing a few strands of (h/c) hair back before kissing her forehead sweetly. the pink on her cheeks was in embarrassment now, as she looked up at Eren who had a grin on his face.

"or maybe it's your face. or your low guard around me..." he kept giving crazy reasons for why (y/n) had fought back, with each reason his smile growing impossibly bigger and happier than before. she swallowed her shyness down and stood up from the bed to be closer to Eren's height. she gently pulled him down so she could reach his forehead, moving his hair back and kissing it as Eren did her.

her shyness was back in seconds, her realizing fully what she did and mentally agonizing over it. while she stood with a mortified face, Eren laughed and gently ruffled her hair.

"I think it's because you're shy that you are able to fight back," Eren said seriously and once again, (y/n) laughed.

"that sounds...dumb. I agree with you." (y/n) didn't have to concentrate as she looked at Eren and saw him: a brown haired, green eyed boy that she had never looked through.
