Chapter 42

Ruby sits in her room later that day when Atem walks in "Wanna talk?" he asks "Not sure you can help me" she says glancing at him "Try me" he says sitting next to her "I just feel like I'm missing something" she expains "Adventure maybe?" Atem asks "Yeah, I guess, with only dad it was easy since he was teaching Summer" "Ruby, Atem. I need help" Silver says entering the room too "With?" Atem asks, but a book is thrown on the bed "The legendary bird of the gods" Ruby reads "Didn't you already give a feather to someone?" Atem asks "Thought so too, but no. I also asked Isis what's wrong with Ruby and she told me to take her on an adventure, turns out that I need her help to get there".

They head off the next night so no one notices and Ruby sighs "I'm not sure how long she can fly at night" she says as her dragon appears and they get on "Let's go. Mom's on her daily midnight stroll" Silver says, so they head off "It takes a day and a half to get there, think they'll be worried?" "Ra won't. Your mother will freak out" Atem says "She has been trying to get this tradition banned" Ruby says with a shrug "Dad won't allow it though, he thinks gods should prove themselves worthy of the person they want to marry" she adds while laying on her back.

In the morning Ra is surprised they don't show up for breakfast, Ruby's favorite meal of the day "Strange, Silver's always on time and Atem usually drags a half asleep Ruby along" Luna says, Isis looks at Summer who's looking worried "What's wrong Summer?" Jack asks "Well I overheard Silver the day before yesterday" she says "He was reading a book, I had to leave when he went looking for Ruby though". Raven walks in and hands Ra the book she found on Ruby's desk "I think I know where they went" he says "To get one of the feathers" "We do need to ban that tradition" Luna says "Gods died trying to get those" "He took Ruby and Atem with them, they'll be fine" Isis says "If anything it'll give Atem a chance to get one too" "My daughter is not allowed to marry him" Luna says "He was a king, I don't see the problem" Jack says, but Luna looks at him "Oh no" he says seeing the look in her eyes "Not to be rude" Sakura says as she walks over to Jack "But he's taken" "Then Drake" Luna says.

Ruby facepalms and Silver simply sighs "As expected" Atem says, they knew their mother was strict when it came to marriage, but even she should see that Ruby won't listen to her like that "Atem calm down" Silver says seeing cracks form in the ball "Show Egypt" Ruby says "A war for the throne, what a big surprise" she comments "Open spot Ruby" Silver says "Your prophecy still stands. That a goddess is to rule Egypt" "Mom hid that book" Ruby says crossing her arms.

"You don't have a problem with Silver and Summer" Ra says looking at his wife "And you were a human once" "It's different. Ruby's young, Silver's replacement" Luna says, this earns her a sigh "No. She's meant to rule Egypt and restore it to it's glory" Ra says "The land is torn apart" "Then we send Atem back" "And break Ruby's heart?" Raven asks "She will hate you if you do that, not to mention that she'll ignore you, become more reckless and if she's super depressed she'll try to get herself killed" "The young one is right" Isis says "Let Ruby follow her heart. You taught her to do that" "She barely knows him" "Tell me then. Who does she turn to when she's feeling down?" Isis asks "You or Silver" Ra says "Exactly" Isis says "She also has known Atem for longer, they're soulmates, if you still believe in that"

Ruby yawns, interrupting Silver's thinking "We can land over there, you need some sleep" he says "I'll be fine if I switch monsters" Ruby says "You're straining yourself too much" Atem says "And from what we read the bird is huge, strong and dangerous" he adds, Ruby doesn't care much though, she's been there before, lots of sunlight and the bird wasn't that dangerous "She doesn't care" Silver says with a grin "She'll recharge when we get there". Ruby opens her bag and takes out a flute, which she plays and a screech is heard "Jump" she says and they jump off, landing on Ruby's summon "Smart, but Yusei will notice it missing" "Shut up and let me play, we won't get anywhere if it's dark and there's no other way through the storm other then speed, I do suggest you hold on". In front of them is the barrier that protects the bird's island and getting through it us usually a pain, but they did their research and the only way they could get through without the least trouble is as fast as possible.

Luna walks off when she can't win the discussion about who to send to Egypt "She'll come around" Isis says "But she's protective of Ruby" "Ruby's phoenix summon is gone" Yusei says running into the throne room "They reached the storm" Ra says "Storm?" Mokuba asks, asking what all the new gods want to ask "Around the island of the bird is a large storm, protecting it from intruders, to go through it and getting the fewest injuries you need to go at a pretty high speed, however, there's also a danger in doing that, at that speed it's hard to control your summon's movement, one wrong move and they fall" Bella says "However since very few people ever return from getting a feather we don't have proper medicine, Ra returned, but he came back without injuries" "The flute is missing" Luna says "My flute?" Ra asks earning a nod "I think they'll come back without injuries too" he says "Still want to ban the tradition and I want to set some condition since Ruby apparently won't marry anyone else" Luna says "I want her to go to the bird alone and come back with two feathers that are identical to each other" she adds "That takes a lot of time" Ra says "You know that. I had to do the same thing."

"Strict is an understatement" Ruby says with a sigh "Might as well get your feather too, if I'm correct they can watch us again on the island "Atem, don't break it" Silver says "No, we'll go together then, Atem has to watch your summon anyway, mom will allow that freedom, you're gonna be drained when we arrive" "That and you won't survive taking on the creature alone, Ruby dodge, it's coming for us" "I can't dodge that" Ruby says and the phoenix dives down to dodge "If this fails I'm gonna be dead, keep that ball in one piece" Ruby says jumping off and she lands on the other bird "And lure it to the island, I want mom to rethink that I cannot handle myself" she adds "Change your outfit first!" Silver calls, not even Ruby could take down that bird in a skirt "You asked for it now Silver" Atem says "Because she's gonna prove your wrong" "And risk dying?" Ruby asks "I'm not that stupid" she adds laying flat on the bird so she won't get blown off when if follows the phoenix and as soon as they cross into the blue sky Ra gets them in view "Where's Ruby?" Summer says "You just made her reckless" Raven says "She's on the bird?" Luna asks "Why are you so strict towards her?" Drake asks walking over "Ruby's reckless, tends to get in near death situations-" "In which your forced her this time" "And she cannot marry Atem if she can't prove she can handle herself in any situation" Luna watches silently after that though.

Ruby stands up, stumbling a bit when she's almost forced back down by the wind "Hey ugly" she says summoning her staff "You only have a second when we reach the island, it's catching up to us", Ruby raises her staff and hits the bird with a meteor making it crash down and she runs to the tail, plucking two feather before jumping down, the bird crashes on the island and Ruby lands roughly in the trees "Ruby" Silver says running over "Got them" she says showing the feathers "Now let's get yours" she says looking at the massive creature "Looking at it from here it's bigger" she comments dryly while handing Atem the feathers as she summons her sword instead of her staff, Atem watches as the two siblings head off to the top of the mountain to the nest, the only way you were getting a feather is the way Ruby took it down, but most people aren't stupid and reckless enough to think about that and actually do it when the idea crosses their minds, the only other way is to make your way to the nest of the bird, though there's a real disadvantage in doing that since the terrain is unknown to everyone and the path is dangerous, not to mention that the mountain is unstable and the nest is keeping it together, meaning a lot of falling rocks.
