Intro: Now to show my praise for an over-hated ship. Alphonse Elric is the younger brother of Edward Elric, and spends most of his time in the series without a body, and his soul bonded to a suit of armor. Mei Chang is one of the princesses of Xing, a part of the Chang clan, and she spends most of the series in two moods: "find a way to gain immortality", and "ALPHONSE ALPHONSE ALPHONSE ALPHONSE ALPHONSE". It's adorable.
Proof: While Mei didn't particularly pay attention to Al at first, that was because she was so enamored with the idea of Edward Elric... then she actually met the two. It didn't take long until Mei hated Edward and fell hopelessly in love with Al. But surprisingly, her feelings, while exaggerated a lot, are genuine. She cares a lot about him, and the hardest thing in probably her whole life to go through was when he asked her to sacrifice his life to save Edward.
And the feelings seem to be reciprocated. While through most of the series, Al seemed to think of her as a friend, it wasn't until the last few episodes where he seemed to show a romantic interest in her. And judging by the end picture with Edward and Winry, the two most likely got together at some point. Not as clear as Edwin, but still telling.
What I think: I think this is the ship that catches the most hate out of Fullmetal Alchemist's main four ships, and I think it's because there appears to be a big age difference... which is false. It just looks like there is, mainly because not only is Mei particularly short, but Al is bigger than he should be because... you know, suit of armor. She's not that much younger than him, only a few years. But just because it does look that way, this ship catches a lot of undeserved hate, which isn't fair. I guess I partly ship this out of pity for that reason.
