Rae's POV
Walking down the pathway to my house, my shoes rustled through the crisp yellow leaves. I dug my hands into my pockets to hide them from the chilly Fall breeze. I just wanted to run into my room and hide. Forever.
It was the end of the first week of the new semester and I had already gotten bad grades. 3 B's in English, Maths and Psychology. For a straight A student that was pretty bad. Or maybe I'm just a perfectionist. Either way; I wasn't pleased. I felt like I was letting everyone down. This was the only thing that I had control of in my life and I couldn't even get it right.
I stuffed my hand into my bag and searched for my keys. After finding it, I twisted it in the lock and the silence from the apartment immediately wafted past me causing me to feel uneasy. Swallowing, I stepped inside, the floorboards creaking as I did so. I dropped my bag and flung my keys on the tiny, battered, wooden table.
"Dad?" I called as I slowly walked towards the living room.
No reply.
Tucking a strand of hair behind my ear, I walked towards the kitchen. Placing my hand around the door handle, I nervously pushed it down.
Dad was hunched over the small, round, kitchen table. His eyes were burning red as he looked up. His hair, rough. The mug of coffee, untouched. The smell, racing through the air.
I froze.
"Dad?" I couldn't believe the sight before me. I'd never seen him like that in my eighteen years of life.
He forced a smile as he wiped his eyes, picking up the mug of coffee and placing it in the sink.
"You didn't even touch that," I stated flatly.
He shrugged, opening the tap to wash away the coffee. He kept the tap running longer than necessary, just staring at the water as if he'd only just seen it for the first time.
"Is mom okay?" I gulped.
There was silence.
"I'm sorry princess, her condition has..." he ran his fingers through his hair as he fought back tears.
"What? Has what?" I asked, alarm in my voice as my heart beat tripled.
Please don't tell me anything bad. My inner voice begged.
He took a deep breath and closed his eyes. "Her condition has worsened."
I froze.
The room stopped.
I felt my heart shatter into a million tiny pieces.
"No." I shook my head. "No it hasn't!" I yelled as tears stung my eyes. "She's getting better. They said she was getting better!"
"I'm sorry." A tear rolled down his cheek.
"No! You don't understand, I saw her yesterday and she was smiling. They said she'd improved! She was getting better!" I cried as I pushed him causing him to stumble backwards.
