Probably one of the most well known badasses in Greece is Artemis, Goddess of the hunt, wild animals, wilderness, childbirth and virginity and in later tellings the moon. Now Artemis is known to relieve women of disease and for bringing them in the first place, so let's not piss her off. She even has her own gang called the Hunters of Artemis. Now her main rule is no boyfriend...like ever. Why is up for debate. Many believe it is due to that fact that she, along with Athena( she'll be getting a chapter this month next), and Hestia( goddess of the hearth) took vows of chastity. Now anyone who threaten her chastity normally got an arrow to the face...or was punished in some other way, but nine times out of ten it was an arrow to the face.
Like all illegitimate children of Zeus, whether they be god, demigod, or mortal, stepmommy Hera put that girl through some stuff. In some art, there are depictions of her being beat by Hera and later crawling into Zeus' lap for comfort. Sadly not a lot of childhood stories of her survived.
Going back to that no boyfriend thing, she did sort of have one at some point, the hunter Orion. Now they did go hunting together a few times, but exactly happened got muddled. Now in one version he boasted he'd kill every beast on earth, pissing off Gaea. This lead her to either killing him herself, or somehow tricking Artemis into doing it herself. Either way, he ends up dead and Artemis places him among the stars...awww.
There were a few cases where either a misunderstanding or poor decisions ended with some less than stellar results. Adonis for example boasted about being better than Artemis, and instead of challenging him, she went to the next step of just sending a wild boar to kill him( point for efficiency ) Another story involves a kid named Bouphagos, who is the son of the Titan Iapetus, sees Artemis and thinks about raping her. Reading his sinful thoughts, Artemis strikes him at Mount Pholoe. Siproites is a boy, who, either because he accidentally sees Artemis bathing or because he attempts to rape her , is turned into a girl by the goddess. Now there are other stories, but they all involved someone pissing her off. And I've mentioned her in the story of Atalanta, because seriously , there is nothing more badass than being raised by a bear. She's someone many women in Ancient Greece turned to, and no one can blame them. She wasn't really a woman who followed the norm and was the second most worshipped deity. And that's pretty badass.
