So there are a limited number of Greek Myths,or any myth actually that actually have a happy ending for the protagonist. Like normally they end up in a fuck up situation, dead, or get the sad ending on this playthrough. But when I found this story, my hope returned. This is the story of Baucis and Philemon.
So every culture has certain rules and customs when it comes to hospitality. Like in most cultures you have to greet the eldest person in the room first as a sign of respect, punctuality, so on and so forth. But the Greeks. Their rules stem from the Gods popping in every once in a while, or at least that's what I think. Any who, Baucis and Philemon, they're an elderly couple from... it just said Phrygia, and the gods were like" These people are so rude, we should hit the reset button for this town."Actually, they wanted to get rid of the wicked people of the town. You know.... that things Christians stole and changed for their own benifits. I swear they do this all the time. Any way, Hermes was like," How about we wait to open the floodgates." So the gods were like" Fine". Zeus and Hermes then went down disguised as " most Definitely Not Zeus" " Beggar Hermes". Oh look at that, a story where Zeus actually keeps it in his pants.
So they go door to door, only to get rejected. Then they came upon the old couple Baucis and Philemon.
You see Baucis and Philemon didn't have much. They had little food, but they didn't want to turn away the beggars( who they didn't know was Zeus and Hermes), because they had nothing. So they brought them in and fed them and gave them wine. But they caught on, because their wine didn't run out.. and it became Hight quality. God dammit Zeus, you're supposed to be in incognito. So Philemon wanted to kill the guard goose and feed it to the two gods. But the goose jumped in Zeus' lap. At this point Zeus was like," Okay, these can live. But they need to be moved."
So Hermes lead them up to the hill mountain above Phrygia and told them " what ever you do, don't look back. "Oh look , another thing Christians stole. The moment they reach the top,Zeus hit the release button, flooding the town. Zeus had also turned their cottage into an ornate temple. The couple's wish to be guardians of the temple was granted. They also asked that when time came for one of them to die, that the other would die as well. Upon their death, the couple were changed into an intertwining pair of trees, one oak and one linden, standing in the deserted boggy terrain.
And that is why you should be a good host. You'll never know if the gods are testing you.
