So we're going to America and are looking at the Cherokee sun goddess/ spirit Unelanuhi, also if you're Cherokee feel free to correct me at anytime. You see the Sun is feminine and the Moon, her brother , is masculine. But this is about Unelanuhi. She had quite a few stories that were passed orally. And if you got them wrong, then you got scratched. I would like to say to any and all my Native American( more specifically the Cherokee) readers that I apologize ahead of time if I mess up any of your stories or offend you in anyway.I only have the internet for this stuff.
So Unelanuhi, one myth I'm familiar with is the one that explains the rain. It goes like this: The Sun and Moon were having a conversation at Unelanuhi's daughter home that went like this:
Unelanuhi was like" The humans are so rude. Every time they look at me they make a hideous face."
And the moon was like" Really? They never make hideous faces at me?"
So Unelanuhi is understandable pissed at that, and decided killing the humans with intense heat was the best way to deal with the issue. The spirit people told their human kin that in order to survive they must kill the Sun. The humans agreed with this and two of them turned into copperhead snakes. But plot twist, they were blinded, and spit it a green venom to this day. So on try numero dos, two more people were transformed. This time into a rattlesnake and an Uktena (a fearsome horned serpent in Native American mythology). So they go to the daughter's home.
Now the daughter opened the door for her mother's arrival, but the rattlesnake pulled a Sun Wukong, and killed the daughter instead. Unelanuhi found her daughter dead and then proceeds to lock herself inside due to grief. That solves the heat problem, but it sort created another one in the form of complete darkness, again. So the spirits said," Okay so any volunteers to go to Tsusginai, the ghost country, and retrieve Her Daughter from the dead?" They manage to find her, beat her with sticks, and put her into a box, and under no circumstances should they open the box until the reached the daughter's home. After complaining of thirst and hunger, the daughter did convince them to open the box in fear of her suffocating. They opened it and she flew out in a form of a red bird( some say a Cardinal). So Unelanuhi, struck with grief again, proceeds to cry to the point she accidentally start flooding the world.
The people danced and sang their best songs for Unelanuhi, but nothing worked. That is until a drummer changed his song. Unelanuhi, for a moment, forgot her grief and smiled. But every now then she remembers.... and that is why it rains.
You see this story is like that in many cultures, the Great Flood.
Unelanuhi is pretty prideful, being the sun and all. She was so wrapped up with the fact that they squinted at her, not thinking it was because she was too bright or hot, she gets upset, especially since they smile at her brother. You can use comparisons in the modern day. Upper class people tend to get pissy when working class get something the slightest bit wrong and then proceed to take everything out on them. But the moment they lose everything, reality becomes a bitch.
