Maddie
If I could, I would rip these tubes off of me right now.
The nurses have been so good to me. They don't complain about anything. Not even for giving me sponge baths.
Jen came back, like she said she would.
I felt her squeeze my hand again.
"I believe in you. I believe that you'll wake up and feel better. I believe you'll come out of this. You're a fighter. You're strong." She says. "I love your hair, you know that? Pretty and long and blonde, like mine."
I feel her grab a piece of my hair and she twirls it around her fingers.
"I want to get to know you. Who's your family? Things like that."
I have no family.
There's no one left that I love.
"C'mon, you can snap out of this. You're too young to die."
Die? I don't want to die. I don't know if I can snap out of this. It's not that easy. It's not like you're having a nightmare and you can just wake up. This nightmare is a reality. And it takes longer to wake up. Others can shake you until you're awake. For me, I'm on my own. I'm alive. I can't speak but I can hear. I can hear her soothing voice.
"I don't really know what to say. I guess I could tell you my name. My name is Jennifer. Jennifer Lawrence."
JENNIFER LAWRENCE IS TALKING TO ME AT THIS EXACT MOMENT IN TIME! I CAN'T BREATHE!
Deep down inside I'm fangirling. Is that even possible? To fangirl while in a coma? Well, it is today.
"I like to play sports. My birthday is August 15th. Um, what else should I say?" I can hear her thinking aloud.
"Ben and Blaine are my brothers."
Oh, well that makes sense.
"I wish you would wake up."
I attempt to tighten our grip as she holds my hand.
I hear her gasp.
"Y-you can hear me! Ben! Blaine!"
"What is it?" they say in unison.
"She can hear me!"
"I seriously doubt that." Ben says.
"Don't believe me? Watch." she says. "Hold my hand tighter."
I try to do what she tells me. Eventually, I do as I'm told.
"See?"
I hear someone walk in. There's another voice.
"Is Jen still here?" another woman asks.
"Mom, she believes that that girl can hear what's she's saying." Ben says.
"It's true, I read about it somewhere. People in comas are able to hear you, they just can't respond." their mom says. "I'm Karen, by the way." I hear her say that.
Then I feel Jen lay her head on the side of the bed and her hair tickles my hand.
I want to twirl her hair like she did for me, but all I can manage to move is the slightest muscle - which was my index finger.
I felt Jen rub my hands. Telling me while whispering, "You can do this. You can do this."
I remember when I said those exact words a few months ago. When I was about to jump on that train.
