St. Mungo's

Nobody's POV

Bright, natural sunlight cascaded through the single window of Room 273 at the St. Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries.

It shone on Hermione's pale, scratched, swollen face as she took a shallow breath.

Sitting in two chairs nearby were Harry and Ron, both sitting quietly, eyes glistening.

"I could have done something," Ron said sadly.  "I shouldn't have been such a coward."

Harry put his arm around Ron's shoulders.  "Don't worry, mate.  It's not your fault.  She obviously couldn't be helped.  She was getting smothered and bitten by hairy, possibly venomous spiders while being stabbed by broken glass and crushed by heavy textbooks.  It's a wonder if she'll even wake up today."

A tear rolled down Ron's cheek.

"Harry," he said.  "What exactly did the nurse tell you?  Tell me the truth."

There was a moment of heavy silence.

Harry took a deep breath.

"Hermione was infected by the broken glass, which could be and is most likely deadly.  When the books fell on Hermione's fingers, all her fingers were broken instantly.  The broken bone fragments punctured her skin, so she might not be able to use her hand for a while.  And... well, she was obviously bitten by the spiders.  She had an allergic reaction, and the venom from the bites- there were almost 20 bite marks- is deadly and will most likely..."

Ron's eyes glistened with tears.

Harry wiped his tears away.

"Ron, Hermione's going to die."

Hermione took a shaky breath, and Harry and Ron sat in silence.

Ron took hold of Hermione's thin, unbroken, cold hand, covered with cuts and scars.

He could see the word "Mudblood" carved on her forearm.

"Please, Hermione," he said.  "We've been through too much together.  I love you.  We love you.  You have so many friends who are counting on you.  Please, just wake up."

As soon as he said this, the heart monitor next to Hermione's bed began to beep faster.  Ron looked at the heart rate monitor.

The monitor began to turn red as the heartbeats became slow and weak.

Then, the reading went to zero.
