"Damn, look at all those white people." Your older brother says as you two look out the window of the yellow school bus you guys just arrived in. Today was the day that white schools would be allowing students of color to be in their school. You had to agree with what your brother was saying. Outside there were crowds and I mean crowds of white folks lined up in front of the high school to watch this. You could tell a good portion of them were not happy to see a bus full of colored kids.
Finally the bus driver opened the door and a few officers came on, walking up and down the isle.
"I suggest you guys stay close together and do not branch off away from our views. It is in the best interest of your safety." He says. You let out a shaky breath as the kids in the front began to pile off the bus.
"Let's go," your brother got up and walked down the isle. You followed closely behind him, immediately hearing all the things that were being shouted by some of the white parents.
"Send them Negros back to where they came from! We don't want them here dirtying up our school." You listened in disgust at some of the things the people were saying. You look around at the white kids, who stood in their group of friends. Some were in awe, others disgust, and a few were indifferent to what was going on.
You were escorted to your class by one of the officers. You were really nervous when you guys reached your class, English. Your palms were sweating as he knocked on the door. Right away the door opened revealing this middle aged male with salt and pepper colored hair.
"Ah, our new student, welcome." He smiles a genuine smile. So, he wasn't racist. That was good. The officer nodded and left you with the teacher. "I am your English teacher, Mr. Chadwick." You walked into the class, your eyes scanning over the kids in there. You were going to be the only black kid in there.
"Go ahead and have a seat next to Mr. Payne." He instructs, you look over to all the empty seats, trying to figure out who was 'mr. payne'? You eyes landed on a boy who raised his hand up slightly, giving you a slight nod. You made your way over to the seat, setting your bag on the floor and sat down.
"Hi, I'm Liam." He says holding his hand out for you to shake. You stared at his hand, your mother had taught you to never touch a white person, it was seen as being disrespectful. "You're suppose to shake it." He chuckles. You hesitantly shake his hand. He smiles then starts writing the notes on the board, you follow soon after.
When the bell rang, you gathered your things and followed everyone out the class.
"Hey, wait up!" You heard someone call from behind you. Dismissing that it was probably directed at someone else, you continued to walk. You felt a tap on your shoulder and stopped walking. "Hey! Why didn't you stop?" You turned to see Liam smiling cheekily at you.
"Oh, I didn't know you were calling me." You replied, holding your books to your chest tightly, ignoring all the stares you were getting,
"Well I was, what class do you have next?" He asks, you hand him your schedule and he quickly reads it. "Wow, we have all classes together up until 6th period and then we have 9th together." He smiles handing it back to you. "I'll walk with you." You sighed and started walking with him, while he made small talk the entire time.
"Look at this, Liam made a friend finally and it's a nigger!" Some kid yelled out. You frowned looking over to Liam. He shrugged and shook his head.
"Don't listen to him. You're not a n word, you're a human being just like me." He tells you. You smile, grateful for the fact that he hadn't repeated the word. " I think we're going to have a great time together." He grins, holding open the door to your class for you.
"Thanks," You smile walking, him following after you.
