"I hope you're right Ally," Larry breathed, normally he could read Sarah perfectly but ever since he saw her in the afternoon she had been rather awkward around him. "Hey Larry she's a woman," Ally smiled softly at him, noting his worry. She too was rather curious to know what was wrong with Sarah, "And being a woman, let me assure you, we get like that from time to time."
Larry looked up from the table into Ally's radiant brown eyes, "Why did I ever leave you?" he gazed at her sadly, holding her hands in his, "That was the biggest mistake I ever did." Ally sighed, remembering that day ever so clearly as if it had happened only a few weeks ago. Again it was down to a misunderstanding on Ally's part, she thought Larry was cheating on her with his ex wife Helena and broke up with him right then and there. There was always a lingering question that burned in Ally's mind which had been left unanswered for too long, three years. Even when they had that rather unfortunate ending lunch a few days ago, Larry seemed to avoid her question completley. "I know why you left Larry, you had to, Sarah, she needed you.. maybe more than I did." Larry moved his eyes away from Ally, the whole thing had happened so fast, "You dumped me if I recall correctly, Coretta and Helena tried to convince me to stay and work things out but I guess I didn't have the confidence to."
Ally sat there, in front of Larry, her hand interwined with his, listening to him, "Larry, that day when I saw you with your ex wife," she had to stifle the emotions she felt the last day she saw Ally. The day she thought was Larry's final bow in her life. "I asked you what you two were talking about... and you said 'nothing'." Larry gave a short breathy chuckle, "And then you coated my hair with ice cream and whipped cream." Ally rolled her eyes, she was being serious, "I gotta know, why did you cancel our lunch to meet with her?"
Larry, taking a deep breath through his nose, leant back onto his chair, his hands pulling away from Ally's in the process. "It's not important," he muttered in a quiet tone. But Ally could tell he was hiding something important from her, "Please, you have to tell me, if you love me you would." Larry couldn't keep it from her, Ally did have a right to know what happened and why he called his ex wife out of the blue, "I was talking with her about you," he continued before Ally could get a word in to express her shock, "and about how madly in love with I was and still am..I needed her advice." Ally frowned, now she really wanted to know more than ever, "advice for what? She doesn't even know me."
"But she knew me..the truth is I was going to ask you to marry me," Larry admitted, "there I said it." Ally's eyes widened with Larry's confession. He was going to ask her to marry him? She couldn't believe what she was hearing! "Is that why you acted so strange on our romantic date the day before?" Ally recalled how the meal had started out so perfectly but then the evening like the look on Larry's face, grew increasingly disappointing. She never understood why.. Until now. "The waiter put the wrong fruit cobbler on the table, the one with the ring went to table where the guy was endeavouring to break up with his girlfriend, as wrong tables go that was a good one," Larry explained but Ally was speechless. She could have been married to Larry and lived the happily ever after that she always wanted for herself. She was unsure of how she felt right now. "I took it as an omen that it wasn't right." This sparked Ally's curiosity and puzzlement, "You believe in omens?"
"Kinda," Larry sheepishly confessed. This was a lot for Ally to take in, she didn't know that about Larry. "So you regretted not staying and trying to make what we had work?" Larry nodded, it wasn't often that he became lost for words or hesitant but this was one of those times. "Well with my track record of marriage," he shrugged, he had an ex girlfriend who was the mother of his son, an ex wife who he was still in contact with, "in regards to marriage I am a two time loser, maybe with you I was afraid of strike three." This topic always got to him, Larry's life could have taken a completely different turn if he hadn't left Ally like that. But Sarah needed him and he thought Ally didn't want to deal with him and the hefty baggage of his past anymore.
