Nerves prickled through Bekka's skin, riddling all the way to her foot, making her tap it incessantly. "You want... me... to go?" Bekka's voice squeaked.
Jeythr nodded. "Yes. Rovad doesn't want Greo or Kyren to participate just yet because of the way they humiliated the guild yesterday and between the three of us, you're the best choice." He crossed his arms but smiled, his elven beauty making Bekka blush.
Next to him, Syra's long black hair blew in the gentle breeze along with her white dress, which complimented her caramel colored skin. "Bekka, you're a great strategist which is perfect for this labyrinth."
Kyren and Greo both grumbled. "As much as I hate to admit it," started Kyren, "You're the best choice."
"Go on!" Greo gave her back a shove, pushing her forward, even with the line of other Magi representing each of the fifteen other guilds.
"Begin!" At the sound of Thulok's bellowing voice, a magical beam burst into the air, signaling the start of the competition.
A large man threw a burst of wind that knocked Bekka to the ground. The wind allowed him to take off into the air. No fair! He's gonna be able to see the entire labyrinth from the sky! Bekka mentally shouted.
With a grunt, Bekka stood to her feet and darted into the maze. The other Magi were already inside. Ahead of her was at least five different paths that she could see and there was only one that the other Magi hadn't chosen yet. It would be easier for her to avoid them, since her magic wasn't very useful in a fight and she didn't know how to fight anyway.
The hallway was short and wide, made entirely out of barbed wire. Bekka gasped as the barbed wire slithered off the walls and flicked at her on their own. Screaming, Bekka ducked and backed up, but the entrance she had come through was closed.
She was trapped.
In the center of the room was a shimmering portal. If she could just reach it...
A piece of barbed wire whipped her in the face, so Bekka rolled forward and crawled toward the portal as fast as she could. Being low to the ground helped keep the barbed wire on the walls away from her. At least for a short time.
They landed on the ground and grabbed her wrists, wrenching them apart. It pulled her flat to the ground, striking her back. She cried out in pain but shoved her head through the portal. According to what she had read, most portals only needed a part of the body present in order to work. If her plan worked, she would be teleported away from the barbed wire. She hoped.
Her stomach flew into her throat as a weightless feeling overcame her. Bekka squeezed her eyes shut and when she opened them, she was standing in another hallway. Taking a deep breath, she winced from the cuts the barbed wire had left on her skin.
Bekka came out of the portal on a stone on the floor, which was made entirely out of lava. The walls and the floor bubbled and fireballs shot up from it. Her clothes were singed and Bekka's fur heated up, making her groan. There were stepping stones forming a makeshift path to the door. With a grunt, Bekka jumped up and landed on the next stone. It bobbled for a moment, making her balance waver. She held her hands out with an outcry. Taking a deep breath, she leapt onto the next stone, and then onto the final one.
The gap between it and the door was larger than any she had crossed thus far. There wasn't much room for her to push off of; as it was, the stone nearly had her feet in the bubbling lava that hissed and continued heating her clothes and fur. Bekka groaned and jumped into the air, heading for the doorway.
Her left foot landed on the solid doorway, made from the same stone, but her right foot slipped into the lava. Agony exploded in her foot and ankle, making Bekka scream as her vision blurred. She shoved open the door and stumbled into the next room, which was wide and circular to her surprise.
