PROMPT:
You and Daryl really aren't party people."See you at eight, oh, and dress up!"
"You know...I don't think I'm into that whole party scene. I think I'll just stay here." You grimaced, tracing the dining room table anxiously.
"Relax." Michonne breathed out, sliding in the chair across from you. "It's not going to be a big deal."
You tilted your head. Every fibre in your body loathed the thought of going to a party with a bunch of people who were deceived and juvenile. It just wasn't you.
"I don't know." You complained, glancing over at Michonne. "Are you going?"
Michonne gives you a reassuring look.
"Yes."
"Rick and Carl?"
"Yes."
"Daryl?" Ah, the real question. The thing you really wanted to know.
"I...I don't know." Michonne shook her head, withdrawing from the table and standing up.
"I better get going, it's quarter to eight now. Come on, when they said dress up, I think they meant don't wear the clothes you've killed humans in."
You smiled, standing up.
"Yeah, reckon that might ruin the purity vibe this place has going, right?"
Michonne smiled, nudging you.
"Come on. I'm sure you're expected."
You rolled your eyes, turning to walk away from Michonne.
"I'm Y/n. The man, the myth, the legend. Can't let people think I'm predictable."
Michonne sighed.
"Drink some booze for me, Mich." You call after her, climbing the stairs to the room you stayed in.
"I will." You hear her say as you finish the stairs. When you reach your bedroom, a solid ten minutes of silence go by. From the window, you watch nicely dressed Alexandrian's filter through the streets.
With agony, you pull open the wardrobe door and look at the clothes inside.
They were nice, a little too small- but honestly, it must have been a sign. You ought to give it a go.
Reluctantly, you had a two minute shower, brushed your teeth and put on some of the nicest clothes you'd worn in ages."Wow." You breathed out, looking at the reflection in the mirror. This was the best looking you'd been since the dead rose and ate the living.
Nerves settled through you as you left the house, walking up the empty street to the house with all the noise- and when the door opened, everybody in the party seemed to go silent for a second to look at you.
Honestly, the attention made you die inside. You didn't like being looked at, being talked about.
"Who's she?" Some woman carelessly asked.
Silence rang among the party. It was unbelievable.
"Y/n!" Glenn exclaimed, taking your arm and leading you to a group with himself, Noah and Maggie.
"You made it."
Everyone went back to normal, chatting and mingling.
"Yeah." You sighed, wiping your sweaty palms on your clothes.
"You look really nice." Maggie grinned, hugging you.You stayed at the party for what felt like forever- despite it probably only being fifteen minutes.
Once Maggie, Noah and Glenn had somehow filtered away, you knew your own limit and decided it best if you leave. So you did, out the back door, where nobody questioned you.
With the darkness glazing the street, you made your way towards the house your group stayed at. Not surprised to see Daryl sitting on the railing of the porch, a cigarette in his hand.
As soon as he saw you, he put it out, coughing slightly.
"Not in the party mood?" He called out, looking at you judgementally. "I half recognised you, dressed up like that."You chuckled, climbing the stairs to the porch and sliding onto the railing across from him.
Daryl didn't appear to have tried to get ready for the party at all."Not my type of scene." You sighed, leaning your head against your knees. "You're one to talk, Daryl."
"Ain't about to socialise with some fancy pansies. They ain't my people."
You nod.
"When the world got like this, we all stopped having personalities and social skills so we could focus on surviving. Now we actually have to be humans. We have to think about how we dress, what we say...who we are. I'm not ready to jump back into that yet."
Daryl scoffs. "Right."
"What?" You pried, raising an eyebrow.
"Before all this, I bet you were some kinda receptionist or something. Something real fancy, weren't you?" He chuckles.
You shake your head.
"Let me have my secrets, Dixon."
"Yeah, alright."
"Either way," you noted. "I don't know how to talk to humans anymore."
Daryl shook his head.
"You're talking to me?"
"Yeah..." You tilted your head, staring straight across at Daryl. "That's different."
"Why?"
"Cause...you're you..."
You didn't think you said anything too horribly weird- but the silence made you think otherwise. He didn't reply, which made you self conscious.
"Hey?" You called.
"Yeah?" Daryl replied.
"You ghosted. Conversations only work if it goes back and forth Franklin."
"Sorry. Was just thinking."
"About what? I...I didn't say anything too bad?"
He shakes his head, picking up the unlit cigarette and playing with it.
"About us." He casually replies.
"What?" You stutter, enlarging your eyes. You weren't aware that there was an 'us'.
"We ain't too different, you and me."
You shrug.
"We both like bikes, right?"
He chuckles- and the sound of him laughing warms your heart.
"Yeah...we both like bikes."You shrug, feeling a rush of emotions.
"What else makes us alike?"
"I don't know."
The way he says it, is really contradictory.
"Yeah you do. Can't lie to me, Dixon."
"Well..." He pauses and the pause feels like forever. "We both like each other."You go quiet, your heart fastening.
A minute of silence passes.
"Conversations only work if it goes back and forth, Franklin." Daryl mocks.
"Sorry." You say, smiling sweetly. "Just trying to figure out how you knew I liked you."
Daryl shrugs.
"Michonne told me."You laugh, smiling across at him.
"Okay. Well...what do we do next?"
He shrugs once more.
"Just you and I. When everyone else goes to parties, it'll be us. Aight?"
"Is that a pact?" You ask.
"Pretty much."
"Well...I would like that. You and me?"
"You and me."And now, you were kinda happy you didn't stay at that party after all.
