Astro means star in Spanish so the group was named this so they could be the stars to their fans. Like their label mates 5uprise, ASTRO debuted through a short web drama before making their singing debut. After their debut they were named as one of the best new K-Pop groups of 2016 by Billboard. In 2016 they were also the only Korean act to be invited to the LeTV Entertainment Awards in China. In 2017 they became the first male k-pop group to become CF models for a brand that sells feminine hygiene products. They are nicknamed soft-dolls because of their gentle image.
The members started out in as trainees in a group called iTeen, which was Fantagio's rookie development program. They were known as the iTeen Boys.
