Chapter 17

The creature half breathed, half growled as it crouched behind a bush just allowing its eyes to be seen in the darkness. I stood there shaking, gripping so tight on my wand, my knuckles were probably white. My nails dug into the palm of my hand but I didn't seem to notice. With my other hand, I grabbed Nathaniel's. I most likely stopped his circulation but he didn't say anything. The creature slowly backed up so we could no longer see it and the growling stopped. Finally, I let out the breath I had been holding and the others did the same. I let go of Nathaniel's hand.

"I thought that thing was going to kill us for a second." Angie whispered too soon. The creature sprang from the bushes and soared over our heads, landing behind us with a thud. I spun around to face the beast. It looked like a lion but it was black and had long silver tinted wings. The glare in it's eyes were enough to kill me. I froze in fear. "Lily! Lily what are you doing? Run!" The world was spinning. I took a step somewhere but I have no recollection of what I did.

Somehow, I found myself running. I felt a hand around my wrist. I was aware of almost nothing. I heard another growl then a scream. This brought me back to my senses. It was Angie screaming. I could hear her behind me. I looked back to see Angie looking upward. I did the same. The creature was flying above us, it's deadly teeth glistening in the light of our wands. It sped up. I tried to run faster but couldn't.

Nathaniel screamed "Get down!" from in front of me. I immediately fell to the ground without hesitation. I heard Angie do the same. I heard a growl and a whine. I looked up and saw Magicis fighting in midair with the creature. It was truly a horrible sight to see. Blood was pouring from Magicis' side as he continued to fight. He hoofed the creature in the face causing it to fly back and hit the ground. It's head was now gushing scarlet blood. It curled its lips back and showed its teeth. The hippogryph didn't waste time. It hoofed it once more and that was all it took. The beast slowly fell to the ground, blood pouring from its head.

I cringed and quickly looked away, burying my head into Nathaniel's shoulders. "Is it dead?" I whispered.

He shook his head. "I don't know."

I heard a whimper from behind me. I turned and saw Magicis curled in a ball, practically drowning in his own blood. He looked helpless. His eyes kept fluttering as if he was trying to keep his eyes open but couldn't. Then the fluttering stopped and we knew that he was dead. My heart sunk to see the pour creature on the ground. The creature that had fought to save three children who had stolen him in the middle of the night and brought him here was dead and it was our fault.

We paused for a moment but then continued on. We didn't have much time and of course we didn't know what else the forest had lurking inside. Nobody said anything as we walked. Angie and I walked side by side, simply following Nathaniel who had managed to hold onto the map. I was trembling slightly from the past events that had just happened moments ago. Angie saw this and gave me a quick hug from the side This is when I realized something. "Nathaniel" I said, causing him to jump slightly but he shook it off.

"Yeah?"

"Without Magicis, how are we supposed to get back?" I asked softly. Nathaniel stopped walking and turned to look at me.

"I don't know." He sighed. "This was a stupid plan. Magicis is dead and we're stranded in the middle of the Forbidden Forest!" He screamed in frustration and looked towards the ground.

"First of all, it isn't stupid." Angie said, causing Nathaniel to look up at her. "This was a great idea! We're all still alive aren't we?" She smiled and I nodded my head. "And we're going to be heroes! When we get back, we'll walk through the halls and people are going to whisper to their friends and say 'Those are the people who saved Luke's life! They traveled through the Forbidden Forest and could've died but they didn't! They outran a beast too! And the most amazing part was that they were still First years!' and we'll walk past them, pretending not to notice but in our hearts we'll know how brave we were to come out here in the middle of the night and risk our lives to save someone. Second of all, you say it 'was a stupid idea'. What do you mean was? We're still here! We're still trying! And third, we are far from the middle of the Forbidden Forest. We can walk a little bit to get out! It's only a mile and besides, you could use the exercise Nathaniel." she teased.

I began to laugh and so did Nathaniel. Soon, we were all laughing and it felt like we were back in the Common Room, laughing as if we had no worries. I forgot we were in the dark, forest. I forgot Magicis had just died. I forgot Luke was dying. I forgot everything. I simply lived in this moment, right now. This moment when everything seemed perfect. I smiled, leaning against a tree as the laughing died down. We all still had smiles on our faces. "That was a nice speech, Angie." Nathaniel smiled. "but I could've done better!"

We all began to laugh again.

"Oh please!" I said. "We all know I would've done the best!"

"Oh yeah?" Nathaniel challenged. "I would like to see you try!"

"Four score and seven years ago! Our fore-fathers-" I started until he cut me off.

"Okay, Okay!" Nathaniel said. "You win!"

I smirked at him. "Told you!"

"Whatever!" he retorted.

Angie was shaking her head and laughing at our conversation.

Our laughing abruptly stopped and we were thrust back into reality. Angie's eyes stared forward into space and then slowly shut. She started to fall forward but we quickly ran to her side and caught her. An arrow was coming from her back and she wasn't speaking. Another arrow skimmed passed the top of my head. Another came by, almost hitting my side and tore my robes. "Lily we have to get out of here!" Nathaniel shouted.

"We can't leave Angie!" I shouted back desperately. I realized I was crying as I held Angie who was limp in my arms.

"We have to Lily! She's too heavy for us to carry! We'll die too!"

"Too?!?" I screamed. "She's not dead yet! We can't let her die here!"

More arrows passed us.

"If we stay here, we'll die and so will Luke!" he argued. I began to cry harder and I knew he was right. I suddenly felt a sharp pain in my leg. I screamed in pain. I had been hit just below my knee.

"Lily!" he shouted my name.

I bent over to the ground. I was inches away from Angie's face. "I will come back for you Angela. I promise."

Nathaniel began to run forward but another arrow missed his face by a millimeter. He pointed his wand upward and red sparks flew out of it and above the trees. "Let's go." he grabbed my hand and we staggered forward, away from the arrows.

Nathaniel suddenly let go of my hand. I turned to see what was wrong. The hand that had been holding on to mine had been pierced with an arrow. He screamed and fell forward. I lurched towards him and picked him up from his shoulder. "We have to keep going!" I shouted.

With every step I took, I could feel the pain in my leg worsen. The tears in my eyes blurred my vision until I could no longer see. I stumbled on roots and I tried to keep going.

For Luke. For Angie. For Nathaniel. I began saying over and over in my head. Forget the pain. This is for them. I looked back to see man-like creatures, bows in hand, sprinting towards us. "This is our forest." The one leading sneered. "Get out."

They were getting closer, closing in around us. The pain was becoming too much to handle and the world around me began to darken.

BUM BUM BUMMMMM!!!!! This has been a depressing story...and yeah you can leave all of your hate comments below about how I haven't been updating....I know how long it has been but it feels like I never have time!
