DIARMUID AND GRAINNE
The legend of Diarmuid and Grainne is a popular one, and one of the most romantic ones. It tells us of Grainne, a beautiful, young woman who happened to be the daughter of Cormac MacAirt, the High King of Ireland. Because of her beauty and status, Grainne had many eligible bachelors lining up to take her hand in marriage, including the infamous Fionn mac Cumhaill. Fionn wanted Grainne to be his second wife, and she agreed, though other versions claim she was forced to accept the proposal as she did not want to marry him at all.
A great feast was thrown in honour of the newly engaged couple. However, on the night of the feast, Grainne happened to meet one of Fionn's best warriors, Diarmuid. The spark between them ignited in an instant, and they believed it to be love at first sight.
Desperate to get out of this marriage and flee with her beloved, Grainne slips something into the guest's drinks and after they toast to the engagement, drinking from the drugged chalices, everyone soon falls into a deep sleep - everyone but Diarmuid and Grainne.
With nobody else conscious, Grainne confesses her love to Diarmuid, but ever a loyal warrior, Diarmuid resists the young maiden's attempts. But Grainne was determined to be with the man she loved, and so she put a spell on him, making him fall instantly head over heels for her.
The couple fled as far and fast as possible, but Fionn was furious and he would not give up so easily. He and his men pursued the two lovers relentlessly. As the years passed, Grainne fell pregnant, and she and Diarmuid were overjoyed.
One day, Diarmuid and Grainne came across the heath of Benbulben in County Sligo, where a massive boar forced them to come to a halt. The boar lunged and Diarmuid threw himself in front of a heavily pregnant Grainne to protect her, wrestling the wild animal to the ground. He managed to kill the boar with his sword, but not before it had fatally wounded him.
Fionn and his men happened upon the quarry, their eyes landing on a dying Diarmuid in Grainne's arms. Grainne knew she had just one chance to save him, and so she begged Fionn to save his former warrior with a drink of water cupped in his magical hands.
Fionn refused to help, but when his son Oisin stood up to him and professed he would kill him if he did not help Diarmuid, Fionn finally caved in and agreed to help. But, before he could reach the water, Diarmuid died from his wounds, leaving behind his devestated lover and his unborn child.
