THE SWORD OF SUMMER

Sumarbrander, also known as the Sword of Summer, was a magical weapon able to fight and move by itself. It was a gift from the Æsir to Freyr after the war between the Vanir and the Æsir, as a way of declaring peace.

The legends say that one day, Freyja disappeared to find her lost husband Odr, and no one was able to find her nor her husband. His brother, Freyr, assumed the risks and sat on Hlidskjalf, Odin and Frigg's throne. The throne gave the power to see through the nine realms to the one sitting on it, so Freyr used ir to try to find his sister.

Instead of finding Freyja, Freyr saw the face of a jötunn, Gerd. He fell in love immediately with her, but knowing he wouldn't be able to be with her, he returned home with sadness in his heart that affected his powers, the plants and the animals in every realm.

Njord, his father, tired of seeing him like that, asked Skirnir to find out what happened to him. He was a great friend of Freyr, so he ended up knowing about Gerd. He promised to bring her to Freyr, but with a price: Freyr had to give him Sumarbrander in return.

The god of Sunshine and Rain was so desperate to marry Gerd that he accepted. Skirnir found the giantess, and convinced her to marry Freyr. In return, he got Sumarbrander, the Sword of Summer.

Other legends say that Freyr gave Sumarbrander to Gymir, Gerd's father, in return of letting him marry his daughter. However, in every myth Freyr ends up losing his sword.

This action determined Freyr's destiny in Ragnarok: without his sword, he will die first, fighting against Surtr, the fire giant.
