"I think he's gonna ask me to marry him!"
•••"Baby, I thought you-woah..." I stumbled back a bit in complete shock. "You look just like my girlfriend."
"I'm not interested."
"I'm sorry, I wasn't trying to hit on you. You actually look like my girlfriend," I chuckled while pulling out my phone from the inside pocket of my blazer and showed her my lock screen, which was a picture I took of Victoria on her birthday getaway.
The woman's eyes grew big, "Oh my...holy shit. Isn't it bad to see your own doppelgänger?"
"Something like that, but it's just a picture thankfully," I joked, slipping my phone back in place.
"What's her name?"
I rested my arm on top of the bar, "Victoria, what's yours?"
"Funny story, that was actually going to be my name until the moment I was born. My mom decided on Aurora instead."
"Aurora, Victoria," I mumbled. "They rhyme."
"They surely do," she giggled lightly. "So much for spooky season."
I nodded my head in agreement, "It's her favorite."
"Mine too! Scary movies, pumpkin patches, and spooky decorations. I love it all, I always have."
"Me, not so much. I'm more of the Christmas person."
"I used to be like that," her mood suddenly changed and I could tell that something must have happened. "Luka, my boyfriend," she looked down at her glass of water. "He-"
"You don't have to talk about it, it's okay."
"It's been almost two years since he died," a sigh left her lips.
Damn. "I'm sorry for your loss."
"We decided to go out Christmas night since we were cooped up inside all day long. I was having hella cabin fever and really needed to work off dinner. I just never thought I would end up in the hospital."
She was in a-
"Car accident. We were hit by a stupid drunk driver. I have really shitty memory, but for some reason I remember absolutely everything about that whole day leading up to that moment."
"I'm so sorry to hear that," I rested my hand on her shoulder for a few seconds before stuffing it in my pants pocket.
A small smile appeared on her face, letting me know that she appreciated the gesture. "We were ironically talking about watching The Nightmare before Christmas once we got home. Not even ten seconds later, his head turned to look in my direction and I could feel headlights shining on my face. I thought it was weird so my eyes darted to what was in front of me. I screamed at the top of my lungs for Luka to move and pointed at the oncoming car. Without even questioning, he hovered his body across mine and held me close. He literally saved my life by sacrificing his own. The saddest part was that the car hit us so hard that it literally ripped him from me. I tried to hold onto him as we waited for impact, but I couldn't. It was like in the blink of an eye and he was through the windshield." Her eyes welled up with tears and I felt really bad for her.
"Hey, it is not your fault. You can't blame yourself for what happened."
"I can't help but blame myself."
"I definitely couldn't imagine what that must have been like or remotely be able to feel that pain, but I'm sorry you had to go through that. A lot of situations are out of our hands, no matter how much we think we can avoid them. It was not your fault that someone else was recklessly driving. You just unfortunately happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time."
