"So what's the verdict," I asked, trying not to sound nervous because I could only imagine what was going on in her head.
Once a sigh left her lips, I knew the answer. "Nope."
"Come here," I pulled her close. "It's okay. Maybe you just missed your period?"
"Well that wouldn't totally be out of the ordinary. I mean, it's never happened before but it can happen...it's just weird."
"Well maybe the tests are a dud. We can set up an appointment to know for sure, if you want."
She moved out of my embraced and crossed her arms, "No, baby. I'm fine, I just missed this month's cycle."
"Are you upset?"
Her shoulders lifted and fell in a shrug, "I don't-I don't know. I guess I kinda felt a little hopeful that maybe, but it's fine. Probably for the best that I'm not right now. When we're actually ready we could try, right?"
"Of course," I smiled big.
"What if I can't, though?" she questioned.
"Honestly, I never saw myself as father material so the issue of having kids just never really crossed my mind. I wouldn't be mad if we can't, but I would be happy if we can. Does that make any sense?" I chuckled because I felt like I was talking in circles.
"Makes sense," she smiles. "I didn't really see myself being a mom at least not at this point in time. I just have so much that I want to do before I bring another life into the world."
"Yeah," I grabbed her hands in mine. "I want to take you around the world, baby." She playfully rolled her eyes as my phone started to ring. I excused myself and headed to the bedroom to get it. "Hey dude," I answered as Victoria walked in. "Why do you want me to put it on speakerphone?" She looked at me weirdly, probably wondering who I was talking to. "It's Xavier," I sat the phone down on the bed.
"And Helena," she sang.
"What's going on, man?
"We're engaged!" they chimed simultaneously.
I looked at Victoria and her eyes weld up with tears. Pulling her into my side, I congratulated my best friend.
"Helena...Xavier," Victoria smiled so big. "Oh my fucking God, congratulations! What the hell, did this just happen o qué?"
"Literally two minutes ago," Helena laughed. "Hold on, I'm sending pictures!"
