CHAPTER FORTY: I Did Nazi That Coming

Stephen Ludwig Goldburgen’s P.O.V.

I usually love the sound of my alarm going off at three in the morning because that would mean it was time for me to see Addy again. But strangely though, I woke up to the sound of my phone ringing on my bedside table. I was pretty sure it wasn’t my alarm since my alarm tone was the sound of Addy’s voice yelling “Waaaaaaaaaake uppppppp!”

I usually don’t pick up calls at this time of hour but I felt the urgency of that call and decided to answer it. I sluggishly reached out for my phone and swiped the screen without looking at whoever the caller was.

“Yeah?” I answered lazily.

“Stephen?” a familiar voice asked.

“Diana?” I managed to open my eyes and wonder why on earth she was calling me at this hour.

“Are you awake?”

“I am now.”

“Oh, I didn’t mean to disturb you or anything…” she said faintly and I noticed her voice was trembling.

“No, it’s fine,” I assured her. “Something wrong?”

“I was wondering if I…” she trailed off, as if hesitating to continue.

“Diana?” I called out again in concern. I could have sworn I heard her sob on the other line. “Hey, are you okay?”

“I—I’m fine,” she finally spoke. “Can I come over?”

The digital clock on my bedside table showed the time 2:46am. Why she suddenly decided to come over my place at that time, I had no idea but  something must have happened to her.

“Yeah, sure,” I told her. “Where are you anyway?”

“I just got out the house,” she said.

“Do you want me to pick you up?” I offered.

“No thanks. I’ll just walk. I live just down your street, remember?” she reminded me.

“Of course,” I lied. I didn’t even remember where her house was. I think it was kind of unfair for me not to remember anything about her while she seemed to remember every single detail about me. Maybe I was a sorry excuse for a childhood best friend after all.

Diana then ended the call and I already assumed she was already making her way here. I sat up my bed and carefully reached for my laptop on the floor. Thinking that it was only a few minutes before 3:00am, I decided it was best to turn it on, in case Addy would be online before that time.

Not a few seconds later, my phone rang again and Diana’s name appeared on the screen.

“You’re here already?” I guessed.

“Uh, yeah,” she answered weakly.

“Wait, I’ll be down in a sec,” I told her as I ended the call. I jumped out the bed and went down to the front door to get her. When I opened the door, Diana’s frail blue eyes and feeble smile welcomed me. Her eyes were even puffy from crying.

“What happened?” I asked in concern.

She pursed her lips as if trying to hide something as she swallowed hard, trying to control herself. I actually had no idea what to do at this point. The only thing I knew was that it was freezing cold outside so I stepped aside to let her in. When she finally came in without a word, I closed the door behind me.

Diana was always a mystery to me. She doesn’t really speak much so it surprised the hell out of me to see her in my house at two in the morning. As I stared at her, I realized she was about to breakdown and my gentleman instincts suddenly kicked in and pulled her to me before her knees give in and fall down the floor. Soon enough, she buried her face on my shoulder and I could feel the tears streaming down her face to my shirt. I stood there, completely unsure of what to do since I barely remember anything about her.
