CHAPTER SEVENTEEN: We Tell Our Love Story. Sort Of.

Stephen Goldburgen's P.O.V.

"So how was last night?" my dad who sat across the table asked while Adorabelle and I were eating on our cereal.

"It was...great?" I answered, a bit confused as to why he had to ask.

"Did you use protection?" Adorabelle suddenly spat out her cereal in surprise. I even almost chocked. Being a decent boyfriend I am, I offered her a glass of water.

"No dad we--" I panicked.

"You didn't use protection?" My mom gasped.

Oh dear lord spare me.

Cameron, Sam and Luke stared at us in amusement, clearly enjoying the show.

"That's not what I meant! We didn't... do it..." I answered awkwardly. My parents had this frustrating ability to put me in the most inconvenient situation.

"Don't worry son, your time will come." Dad winked at me. "But remember, don't give me grandchildren. I'm not that old yet."

I sighed. I stared at Adorabelle who was blushing like crazy.

"Dad, you're making Adorabelle uncomfortable." I pointed out. I stared at my annoying older brother who had  had his devilish grin.

"Hey mom did you know that Stephen and Adorabelle ran under the rain just a few days ago?" Luke teased. "How romantic."

"Awww that's so sweet!" my mom cooed. "I didn't know you had a romantic bone in you, Stephen!"

"Me neither." Luke smirked. I bet he's enjoying every second of this.

"So tell me Edward how these two met." my mom asked Cameron who sat beside Adorabelle

.

"Oh they met at the bo---" Before Cameron could finish, Adorabelle elbowed him urging him to shut up.

"Hallway." Adorabelle added quickly. "I sort of dropped my papers, and your son here, being a gentleman that he is, helped me pick them up. He even unconditionally returned my article."

"She was so clumsy, mom, I swear. But if it weren't for her clumsiness, I'd never meet those muddy brown eyes." I narrated as best as I could, trying to sound like those guys in chick flick movies.

Adorabelle stretched out a fake smile and beamed them at me. I did her the same.

"Sam, you're Adorabelle's friend, right?" my mom asked Sam who still had a worst case of a hang over.

"Yup." Sam answered trying to mask her headache.

"So where do they go after school?"

"They uh...." Sam stared at us probably calling for help. "Go on cafés and stuff. Go on a random date, walk in the park, buy ice cream. Oh you know, the usual couple stuff."

I was glad Sam played along. My mom, being a true believer of destiny and true love, stared at the both of us as if were the latest people that destiny and true love had worked on. The guilty pang suddenly hit my chest and I knew lying to my parents was wrong. But I was this desperate to get away with Jonathan.

"We also spend time on the City Oval." I added. This time, it wasn't a lie. "Run some laps and stuff."

"Hey Stephen why don't you tell them the story of how you asked Adorabelle to be your girlfriend." Luke teased. I was about ten seconds close to throw my cereal bowl at my brother so he could shut up.

"Now that I'm interested to hear." My dad remarked. "They say how a guy confesses his feelings towards a girl shows his inner character."

"Story? Right..." I gulped. I did not see this coming. "Pssht why am I doing all the talking? Adorabelle, tell them our story."

Adorabelle stared at me with alarm, clearly annoyed by my decision to pass the story telling to her.

"Oh wow I seriously don't know where to start." she gave me a look and took in a deep breath. "Maybe I should start when he started to stalk me everywhere."

I furrowed my eyebrows at her thinking that maybe passing her the story was a bad idea after all.

"Stephen here followed me everywhere but I didn't tell him to shoo off. I was guessing he had to gather up all his will to ask me to go out with him." she continued. "And when finally did, he nervously came up to me and stuttered 'Will you go out with me?' He was so adorable I swear. I couldn't say no after that."

I tried to control myself. Holy cow that sounded so cliché.

"And we did. A couple few dates followed after that. I realized then that your son here was the most understanding, most calm, most loyal guy I have ever met. He doesn't even notice other girls when I'm around." Adorabelle put on a devilish sly smile on the side of her mouth.

I stayed silent, trying my best not to cut her off so it wouldn't look like it was all made up. I just gave her my sweetest and most fake smile I could manage.

"I was getting restless as to when he'd finally ask me to be his girlfriend. I knew he wanted to tell me so badly but he was such a shy fellow sometimes when I'm around." she added. "So he had set me up with a surprise. He left a cute little note on my locker, hand written, saying that I should meet him on the school roof top."

Adorabelle let out a fake sigh as if trying to remember something that didn't even happen. I stared at my parents who listened intently at her while Luke, Sam and Cameron tried to hold back their laughter.

"When I got there, I spotted a small voice recorder on top of a table with a little note on it. I played the recorder and realized it was Stephen singing What Makes You Beautiful by One Direction." she gave off a smirk. "And..."

"And after all that crap." I finally spoke and gave her my annoyed look. "I told her through the voice recorder that the real surprise was at the park just a few blocks from school."

It was my turn now.

"I was patiently waiting for her there, wondering if she finally got the message on the recorder. I was even concerned that maybe she'd get lost because she was naturally so clumsy." I continued. "But when I heard footsteps coming towards me, I took out my guitar and started to sing to her."

I cleared my throat and started to sing a few lines from Together With The Sundown, just to make it sound convincing.

It's the way that you talk

And the way that you smile

And the way that you love in black and white

Baby it's the way that you hold my hand in the car

and the way we lie on the sand

when we watch the sun go down.

I turned to Adorabelle who stared at me with a mix of surprise and confusion. I totally get her, she hadn't heard me sing. She was probably surprised that I could sing a good few notes.

"Adorabelle, you look like you've just heard Stephen sing for the first time." my mom noticed.

"Oh no no..." she gave off a nervous laugh. "It's just that his voice blows me away every time

he sings. I couldn't help it."

I smirked at her, giving her a sign that we were now even.

"And what happened after that?" asked dad.

"I was standing..."

 "Kneeling..." Adorabelle cut me off.

"Stared intently at her eyes." I added.

"As he tried his best to hold back his tears...." she continued.

"And I asked her to be my girlfriend and she said yes. The end." I hastily ended the story before she adds more crazy crap.

"That was...interesting." my mom commented. "Oh Stephen that's so sweet of you to pull that off."

"Oh yes very interesting indeed." Cameron agreed while he chuckled silently.

"I helped him." Luke winked.

"Aren't they sweet?" Sam added.

 I sighed.

The mess I've started has just begun.
