“No!” Alice called fervently and got up from her place. “No, don’t! Don’t go!” she yelled...
The others looked at her shocked. She sounded like she was holding back sobs and meant every word like life depended on them. Jasper was at her side in a second, trying to soothe her. Carlie began to cry from her spot.
I turned around and saw my daughter running to my side at high speed. She hugged me fervently and sobbed uncontrollably. “Don’t go, Esme!” she sobbed.
“I won’t. What happened, Alice?” “I had a vision. You will die if you will drive away now. It was horrible. I saw that you had a car accident and were severely injured. You would die tonight in the hospital.”
I was still standing on the verge of putting Carlie into the car. I couldn’t move.
So… if Alice hadn’t warned me now, I would have died! I carefully put the baby seat on the ground and hugged Alice fervently. I looked up and the others hugged me as well. Alice still cried with me and Rose.
It was hard to believe that one decision could have ended my life. I hugged Alice closer to me before the boys pulled me in one of their bear hugs. “So, definitely no trips to the park,” I sighed. “Definitely no,” Emmett boomed and pulled me to his side, so that I was standing protected between Jasper and Emmett. I leaned my head against his arm and tried to wrap my mind around this, but I still couldn’t really do that.
Suddenly my phone rang in my purse and Alice already gave it to me after the first ring.
“Hello?” “Hello, Esme, I was just calling to see if everything’s fine and to hear your voice honestly,” Carlisle said and I could hear the smile in his voice.
I was thinking whether I should tell him what “happened”, when he already asked:” Is something wrong?” worry was clear in his voice. “Not really, Alice just had a vision and I’m still trying to process it,” I told him honestly. “What did she see?” “Um… I don’t know how to say this, so I just tell you… She saw me having a car accident and… dying tonight.”
There was a long pause, where I could only hear moving. “Carlisle?” I asked unsure. “I’m on my way,” he said and I could already hear the car. “Love you,” he told me before the line went dead.
“I don’t think that he took it in very well,” I told the others with a weak smile. A minute later we could already hear the Mercedes accelerating and seconds later it revved to a stop in front of us.
Carlisle climbed out of the car and grabbed me into his arms. He hugged me fervently and laid his head on mine. “I love you,” he whispered. I sighed and let all the stress go. Though the next thing I remember was lying in our bed.
“What am I doing here?” I asked confused. “You fainted,” Carlisle answered and stroked my cheek. I groaned. “It was probably the stress of the vision. Nothing to worry about,” he told me. “I hope so.” I could then hear the squeals of Carlie. I looked around and spotted her in the cradle. I smiled and sighed. “I’m sorry,” I told Carlisle and returned to watching him. “For what?” he asked confused. “For worrying you and nearly killing myself,” I said. “It isn’t your fault and it didn’t happen thank God. And even so, the accident wasn’t your fault,” he told me.
I thought about that. “It’s hard to wrap your mind around the fact that I nearly died. I would have never seen our daughter growing up and would have never been with you again… What if something like that happens again? And Alice cannot warn us?” He thought about that. “We can only try to avoid such situations. I will always be there with you or some other family member.” I nodded.
Carlie was “speaking” in her cradle and moved her legs up to touch her feet. I yearned to have her in my arms so I slowly got up from the bed and pulled her into my arms, so that her head rested on my shoulder and I stroked her back. She was looking at Carlisle and smiled.
I rocked her lightly and walked over to him. “I love you so much,” I said. “As I love you,” he told me and kissed me. Carlie squealed, but then began to cry. “Maybe I should get her a bottle. She was sleeping the entire time nearly until you woke up.” “Okay, I come with you downstairs.”
“Oh, and the building contractor called and said that the renovations are done and have now started the interior design.” “That is wonderful, I nearly forgot about that. Did they say when everything will be ready?”
We were just on the banister and Carlie was still wailing. “Around November probably, we could go and see it then, if you like,” he said and took my left hand to guide me down the stairs. “Yes. This will be her first Christmas,” I half-cooed and looked at Carlie. She was occupied with a strand of my hair. “Already planning Christmas in autumn?” Jasper joked and met us at the bottom of the stairs. “I like to be prepared,” I joked and winked at him. “See, Jasper, I’m not the only one!” Alice called from upstairs. We all laughed together.
That occupied Carlie for a bit but she began to cry nevertheless. “Oh, baby sister, what is it?” Jasper asked and Carlie motioned her arms to him. I gave her to him and he whirled her around like a plane. She giggled loudly and totally let go of Jasper’s arm to swirl her arms in front of her. “Next stop of Carlie airlines: the kitchen,” Jasper announced and continued their flight. Carlisle and I followed them. I cuddled to his side and still held his hand.
Rose was already in the kitchen with Renesmee and gave a bottle to Jasper. As soon as Carlie saw it, her hands were reached toward it and she stretched her whole body to get it. Jasper laughed and put her properly into his arms to give her the bottle that she took more than willingly.
“Grandma,” Renesmee called and walked into my arms. “Hi, honey,” I said and snuggled her tiny nose. “Do you want to play something?” “Of course, what do you want to do?” I asked her. “Dancing,” she told me excited.
“Okay, then let’s dance,” I laughed and whirled her around. Edward and Bella were sitting in the living room and smiled when they saw us whirling around. Edward got up with Bella hands intertwined and sat down at the piano and started playing.
I then changed our dance moves to Viennese waltz and we danced in time to it. Then we were not alone on our “dance floor”, as Emmett swirled Rose around with a big grin and a wink at us. We both laughed and commenced to dance in circles.
Renesmee then got down and we both danced perfectly. Even Carlisle and Alice started to dance with us, always laughing. Jasper stood at the door frame and fed Carlie, who was watching us calmly.
At the next song Carlisle whirled Alice over to us and asked me old-fashioned for that dance, which earned a coo from Alice. I smiled at him and accepted his hand. Renesmee was smiling at us sweetly and started dancing with Alice.
I then lay in Carlisle’s arms as he lightly whirled us through the living room. “I want everything to stay this way,” I whispered contently into his chest. “Me too, right now everything is perfect… Just don’t leave me, Esme,” he said tenderly and I looked up into his night blue eyes. There was still a hint of fear and hurt in them. “I won’t,” I promised whole-heartedly.
I reached up to kiss him, when he lifted me up at the hip to kiss me more.
Thank God, it was just Alice's vision after all!!
