After school, the kids normally did their homework, which didn't take long considering they already knew nearly everything. So when they were finished everyone settled to do some kind of activity like usual. I could hear Renesmee outside playing with the boys; the girls were with them probably. I walked up two flights of stairs to go to my office. It was my refuge in a way, whenever I needed time for myself, which wasn't often, but I was glad I had it. Today I was here to work on my blueprints of the new house we were renovating in England. It was easier to have your own house somewhere distant instead of being too close to humans. I had to hurry, because we decided to celebrate Christmas in our little house there. It was a very old estate, which was Carlisle's first house after he was changed and became a doctor. I've only seen it twice, when we flew to London. In the next few weeks I wanted to inspect the house on my own, so I was planning everything through.
Just then I heard footsteps coming in my direction, very distinct footsteps, I thought to myself smiling. I swirled around just in time to see Carlisle in the doorstep. I left my work and hugged him close. He didn't say anything, he only laid his head on mine and caressed my back with his hands. It was so nice to have my husband around me. I was used to having my family around me much more than Carlisle and I really missed him most of the time, but I haven't told him that, it would only upset him.
"Esme, what is wrong?" he asked. "Nothing, I'm fine, why do you ask?" I asked puzzled. He let go to watch my face. His face was full of concern and it all just blurted out. "It's just... I miss you so much whenever you're working. I know you love your work and I am happy for you, but I wish we would have more time with each other and that you could be around to experience every beautiful moment in this family. It's just hard for me," I admitted, but I looked at the ground, ashamed of my revelation.
He hasn't said anything and I started to panic. Does he hate me for saying that? My breathing accelerated, although I didn't need it and my eyes became watery, but no tears were shed of course. I was braced for every reaction possible of him, but not this one. He grabbed my arms and clutched me against his chest. Then his lips crushed against mine and he kissed me with so much passion, I rarely experience with him. I hugged him to my body and let myself enjoy the moment. Eventually he pulled away and watched my reaction. Now it was my turn to be concerned. "Is everything alright?" I asked. He laughed whole-heartedly and I must have worn a very confused yet funny expression on my face. "It's priceless, your expression, you know. I'm sorry. I'm really, I don't want you to feel sad because of me and I do miss you and my family a lot at work. I know I leave you alone so much. I will change that, I promise," he said tenderly and gave me a gentle kiss.
He looked at my desk and let me go, holding only my hand, and watched the blueprints closely. “You’re planning our house in London?” “Yes, I’m nearly finished, if you’re okay with the changes. I wanted to take a closer look to it in the next weeks.” “Of course I am. Would you like me to come with you?” “Yes, I’d love that.” “Well, then it’s settled,” he smiled. I only looked him in the eyes and was lost in them. He mimicked me and held both my hands in his.
