"Tris!" I burst out of my sleep, bolting upright before my head strikes something hard. "Ow!" Annalise complains, rubbing her forehead hastily.
"Nobody told you to stand over me like that." I counter before yawning. "What time is it anyways?"
"Um..." Annalise glances down at her watch, "7:14, but there's someone here to see you." I cock my head sideways, trying to see if I can catch a glimpse of whoever might be here, but the corner of the hallway sticks out, obstructing my view.
"Who?" I ask, running my hand through my hair to smooth it down.
"You'll just have to wait and see," She shrugs, then motions for me to get up. I push the sheets off of my legs and climb out of bed, the cool air greets my legs making me shiver. I strech my arms and walk over to the other side of the bed, careful not to wake Tobias.
Annalise leads me towards the front door of my house I take a sharp breath of excitement, it's hard to contain myself.
"Mom! Dad!" I run towards them and nearly tackle them with a hug. They hug me back and I collapse with them on the ground. I can't hold back the tears, they drip down my cheeks, but I'm too happy to wipe them away, I let them drip onto my jeans.
My mom helps us stand up, "Beatrice, your hair," She starts, "when did you cut it?"
"Two months ago probably, and I go by Tris now." I smile, wiping away the remaining tears.
"You're so beautiful," she says, resting her hand on the side of my cheek. "Who's your friend?" She asks gesturing to Annalise.
"Oh that's Annalise," I motion for her to come over, "I met her at the Erudite compound a few days ago. She helped us escape."
"What do you mean, us? You just said us." My dad says sternly, raising his eyebrows.
"Oh she also helped my other friend get out too." I say to him. I smooth out the wrinkles in my jeans to try to keep the nervousness out of my voice.
"What's her name?" My mother asks. I hear footsteps down the hallway as my parents gazes shift towards them. I watch my dad's eyes widen. I look over at Tobias, he's standing there without a shirt. Nice job Tobias. Way to make an impression.
"Beatrice, did you forget to mention one little detail about your friend?" My dad snaps at me, his voice lowering to a whisper. I let out a nervous laugh.
"No I don't think so... Oh! You mean the fact that he's a guy?" I act surprised by his comment, though I knew this would happen.
"Yes!" My dad whisper-yells. I can tell his infuriated, but my mom smiles.
"Your that instructor from initiation, aren't you," She smiles, "I knew you looked familiar, but I couldn't quite put my finger on it then. Your Marcus's son, Tobias, wasn't it?" Tobias cringes at his name, he's used to me calling his name. "What are you doing here?"
"Well..." I start, "I may or may not have forgotten to mention that he's my boyfriend..." I laugh nervously. My mom smiles, but my dad's expression is unreadable.
"How long have you been dating?" my mom asks, her Abnegation habits washed away in an instant. I look over at Tobias to come over.
"Four months." I say as Tobias wraps his arm around my waist.
"Well I'm glad you make each other happy." my mom says, I smile up at Tobias, I'm glad at least my mom approves of him.
"We should start heading back to the Bureau compound," Tobias announces, starting back towards my old room to retrieve his shirt. I glance back at my parents before following him. I run up to him and jump on his back. "Where did this happy mood come from?" he laughs as I wrap my arms around his neck.
"What?" I ask flirtatiously, "You don't like it?"
"Maybe this side of you could come out a little more often." He smiles, setting me down by the foot of my bed before grabbing his shirt. He slides it back over his head and reaches for my hand as we walk towards the front door. My parents are about to walk out the door, but Tobias runs out in front of them and holds it for them. I can tell he is trying to make an effort to be excepted. I smile as I walk out and lace my fingers with his.
Most of the walk back to the Bureau consisted of Tobias and I talking back and forth with my parents chiming in every once in a while. Annalise seemed really consumed in her watch the whole trip, but I don't bother to ask why.The doors of the compound slide open as we walk through them. Tobias and I immediately head towards the dorms where our friends are staying. Before we know it we're sprinting.
I hear my name being called by my parents, but I don't care. I want to see my friends. We reach the door and I turn the handle quietly, seeing if anyone will notice. I pull the door back and walk in. Immediately all eyes are on us.
"Tris!" Christina squeals as she engulfs me in a hug. "I'm so glad you're okay! I was worried sick!"
Marlene comes over and hugs me too. "I missed you, Tris." her voice is serious, but then goes back to her normal voice, "It's weird not having someone who doesn't want to go shopping around here." she says pulling away and glaring at Christina and Shauna. They put their hands up in mock surrender and I laugh.
Susan seems unsure of herself before coming up and hugging me, "I'm glad you're okay."
"Thanks, I've missed you guys too." I say as the door clicks open again.
"Ay! Trissy! You're back!" Uriah says ruffling my hair. I glare at him and smooth it down again.
"And no one says 'hi' to me?" Tobias laughs. Zeke comes over and looks like he's about to whisper something in his ear but instead screams.
"Welcome back Four!" Zeke screams like a little kid, backing away quickly before Tobias can hit him.
"Thanks for bursting my eardrum," Tobias says, rubbing his forehead like it gave im a headache. Annalise slides in the door and stands behind Tobias, rather quietly so he doesn't know she's there.
I watch as Annalise pounces onto his back and covers his eyes. "Got you!" She screeches loudly.
"Annalise, please get off." He coaxes, bending down so her feet touch the ground, even though she could have reached it the way he was standing. Everyone stares at her with blank looks. Annalise looks at Tobias, waiting for him to explain.
"What are you embarrassed of me or something?" She laughs and walks in front of him. "I'm his sister." She points her thumb over her shoulder at Tobias as short gasps collect around the room.
"The all-mighty Four has a baby sister?!" Zeke teases, stepping farther away from Tobias who rolls his eyes.
"Guys," Marlene yawns, "It's getting late. We should probably go to sleep." We all respond with a chorus of yeah's and okay's.
After a few minutes everyone is settled into their beds. I curl up against Tobias, I missed this. The relaxation of being safe, where Jeanine can't get us.
"I love you, Tris." Tobias says kissing the top of my head. I smile up at him.
"I love you too." I rest my head on his chest as I yawn. "Goodnight."
"Goodnight." He starts, "I love you, don't forget that."
"I won't."
"Are you sure?"
"Yes. I love you, Tobias Eaton."
"Goodnight, Tris."
"Goodnight, Tobias." I start, but sleep has already taken me.
