Although, it did not feel that way for Calypso Matthews, the only daughter of Jeanine Matthews. She needed a place to escape, a place to be free, but trouble seemed to follow her. Calypso faced many difficulties along the way, one of them including death, one of her worst fears. Yet, she maintains a hopeful and diplomatic approach towards her troubles with her partner, Four.

Skylar is just as innocent as her name. After choosing the most dangerous at the ceremony, she knew that she would be leaving behind her Amity mother and boyfriend to engulf in a new and completely dangerous lifestyle that can eliminate her by failure. This sweet and fragile girl wins over the heart of the brave, ruthless leader Eric who seems to have a whole other side to him whenever he is around her. However, Eric is proven to still be hard-headed throughout their journey together, and it's up to Skylar to decide on whether she should accept Eric's ways or leave him behind forever.

Four and Eric finish their initiation, and whilst Four declines joining leadership, Eric does not and brings with him ideas for Dauntless as the years progress. Andrea, born in Amity, is about to take her aptitude test. She knows that she will not be apart of the ninety five percent that stay in the faction of their origin. She's too angry for that. Angry at herself, at her family, at her faction. She knows where she's headed, but she has no idea how long she'll last. It's no surprise to anyone that Andrea chooses Dauntless, freeing herself from the ideals that have stifled her over the course of her entire life. But what is surprising is how much she changes when her environment truly allows her to just be herself.

Carrie Eaton is Tobias' little sister. Getting away from their abusive father, Marcus Eaton, the leader of their faction, Abnigation, is something the two have always dreamed about. What happened when Tobias transfers from Abnigation to Dauntless? What will that mean for the younger Eaton? Will she decide to transfer too?
