Her head pounded as she was lead to a strange room by a group of stormtroopers. They opened the door for her, revealing a strange site. It looked almost like a conference room, and only one person sat there. He sat at the end of the table with his hands crossed, resting in his lap. He seemed very calm, and it terrified Abilene. The troopers that were escorting her left almost immediately. She could feel their fear and she was sure that they could feel her's. Fear wasn't the only thing she felt; anger, disgust, despair, confusion, conflict, torn. The empire was all that she had ever known, and now she was ready to ditch it completely. If not for Anakin, she would have tried already. He was her anchor, and she was ready to release him.
"Please, sit." Bile rose in her throat. Those were the first words he had spoken to her in months. He sounded so different; so robotic; so numb. She did as she was told, and sat down as far away from him as possible, but not so that she was sitting across from him. He seemed almost disappointed. She sat with her feet crossed and her sleeves pulled over her hands, and her head down so that she didn't have to look at him. She felt almost as though she was a child about to be scolded. She didn't do anything. She wanted to scream from the tallest building that it wasn't her fault. She didn't mean for anything to happen. "Do you have any notion as to why you were brought here?"
She shook her head in a small kind of way. Almost like she was simply shy, and not terrified for her life. He sat silently (as silently as Darth Vader could), examining her. She was afraid of him, he knew. He hated it. He was filled with a lot of hate, he had recently realized. He blamed it on Abilene, and Palpatine. Part of him wanted to go back to Obi Wan and forget that any of this had happened; part of him wanted to take Abilene and elope; and another part of him wanted to destroy the whole fucking galaxy. He could feel Abilene's emotions as thought they were his. And it broke his heart. It broke his heart to know that she never really stopped crying; it broke his heart to know that she still cared about him; it broke his heart that she wanted to just forget about him; and lastly, it broke his heart to know that she wished that she never met him. He could feel that she still loved him, and he hated it.
"You know I never wished for this to happen," His voice shook her, "but you must know what there is no way for me to be with you... like we were. We can't let you leave, either. You know too much; about me and the empire. The only choices you have are to die, or to stay." He prayed that she would choose the second choice.
She remained silent, not lifting her gaze off of her lap. She wanted so badly to be free, and if it meant death- no. She still believed that Anakin could be good. Though, in this moment she was far too terrified to speak up.
"Amar, speak so that this may be recorded and documented." The way he spoke made the uneasy feeling in Abilene's stomach no better.
She swallowed the bile in her throat and managed only a few words. "I want to stay." They both knew that was a lie. Abilene practically never stopped talking about how she wanted to leave and study the stars.
Darth Vader nodded and took note. He wanted nothing more than to take off his wretched helmet and embrace Abilene; she needed it, and so did he. Though she could not tell, his heart was racing and he was sweating. He hated being like this in front of her. Now, there was no chance of her ever seeing Anakin again. Anakin is dead... Anakin is dead... Anakin is dead... He repeated this over and over again, hoping to convince himself that there was no going back, that he was too far gone. That he was truly dead. "That is the end of this." Though, it truly wasn't. He wanted to say so much more. He wanted to apologize for scaring her, he wanted to apologize for avoiding her, and above all, he wanted to apologize for all of the stress he was putting her through. She was right- if she had not met him, she would not be in this situation. He blamed himself for everything.
She stood up, shaking. Darth Vader followed her lead, and opened the door for her. It was a small gesture, but it gave Abilene the smallest hope that he still cared. And in the moment she passed by him, he stopped her. The feeling of his hand on her shoulder sent a shudder down her spine. He leaned in close, so that his mask was directly next to her ear. In a small voice, he whispered. "I'm sorry." And with that, he moved his hand to her back and gently pushed her through the doorway. He closed the door behind them and made off hurriedly in the opposite direction that Abilene had began being led away. She must have had a look of terror on her face, or something of the sort, because one of the stormtroopers leaned in and whispered in her ear. "You get used to it. It's honestly not that bad, unless you anger him.." He straightened up and pretended like he hadn't said anything. It was almost like Abilene was a prisoner, and she honestly felt like she was.
That night, her dreams were plagued with the stench of burning flesh and death. She could feel her skin melting off her bones as she struggled to keep a grip on life. She heard nothing but screaming and deep, heavy breathing. She saw nothing but that sickening glow, and that deathly black face. At once, she went numb; and all she felt was the beating suns on her unharmed face. The sand beneath her was coarse, and the heat was stifling. A voice had called out to her, a voice she did not recognise.
She woke, sweating. she kicked off her sheets at some point in the night, leaving her only in shorts and a tank top. Immediately, she felt a presence. She scrambled back, until her head hit the headboard of her bed. His breathing sent her reeling back to her dream, and she became deathly afraid.
"You saw him. Didn't you?" He wasn't wearing his helmet, but he still had the respirator. His voice was soft and groggily, like he had just woken up. But it was normal, not fake. "I sensed your distress. I couldn't help it." He wore normal pajamas, and it suddenly dawned on Abilene that she had never seen him outside of his room (save for the time in the hospital) when he wasn't Darth Vader. "I shouldn't be here at all. I'm going to catch hell for this. I'm sorry, Abilene."
At that, a lump formed in Abilene's throat. She had been crying for so long, imagining all of the horrible things that he could do to her. That she was afraid he would do to her. She never thought that he would come back; she thought that he was too far gone. She was also confused. Who was he talking about? Had he known the person whom the voice belonged to? "God, anakin. I've been so worried! I thought you hated me or something." Anakin clenched his fists and looked away in shame. He tried so hard to hate her- To forget about her. But he couldn't.
"I could never hate you, Abilene. You took care of me, you saved me. How could I hate you?" She didn't do anything! Anakin lost track of how many times he said that to Palpatine; to anyone for that matter. It wasn't her fault! Abilene had only been doing her job, and he got close to her. She wouldn't even be in this mess had he just treated her like any other nurse. He knew that he couldn't do that. She was the only one left of his friends from the days of Anakin Skywalker, save for Obi Wan, whom he wouldn't consider a friend any longer. How did he find her? Obi Wan was worlds away, how had he known about Abilene? Darth Vader knew that it had something to do with the force. He felt it within Abilene the moment she walked into his room. How she had not been discovered, he knew not. THough it was in her, it was weak. Too small to form into the power of a Jedi; or Sith. Just strong enough to form premonitions. Her dreams were frightening, even to Darth Vader. Solely because he was having the same dreams. He knew what he had to do, but he couldn't do it.
Abilene sensed his emotions as she always did. Torn, but mostly defeat. "Something troubles you." She stated.
Anakin let the statement sit before responding. "I am always troubled. It is nothing you should concern yourself with. Get some rest now." With that, he turned and left. Abilene watched him leave, and she swallowed the lump. She slumped against the wall, breathing heavily. He confused her so much. Why was he like this? Why did it have to be Darth Vader? Couldn't it have been some nice man, with no ties to the empire? Or perhaps, a rebel. That would be nice. At least she wouldn't be worried about him slaughtering her.
This time, she did not cry. She planned. She planned in her head her escape. But she kept finding herself thinking about Anakin. She couldn't leave him. What just happened was proof that he was still there somewhere, beneath all of the turmoil and all of the anger. Anakin Skywalker was still alive and breathing, and Abilene insisted that he must return before it was too late. No matter how long it would take her, she would stay and help him. She had to, or who else would? Everyone was afraid of him, and those who weren't afraid of him, were training to become something worse. Something terrifying. She could not afford to let that happen. The fate of the galaxy rested on his shoulders, and Abilene was trying to lift it. It was nearly impossible, she knew. But there was hope, she had see it in her dream. The first time there was an okay outcome. She did not know what it meant, but she did know one thing; it could be done.\\Hint Hint\\
