Aru has lived her life avoiding touch. Ever since she was a child, the slightest brush of skin-to-skin contact floods her with another person's deepest emotions , their grief, their guilt, their secrets. It's a power that isolates her, and one she barely understands. When a mysterious organisation captures her, promising to "help" her control it, Aru quickly learns the truth: she's a subject in a government experiment designed to weaponise empathy. Inside the sterile facility, she meets Cloud - a boy engineered to be her opposite. Cold, detached, and incapable of feeling anything, Cloud has been molded into a perfect assassin. Where Aru's gift makes her fragile, his emptiness makes him unstoppable. Yet, against every rule and expectation, the two are drawn to each other. Aru's emotions begin to anchor Cloud's hollow existence, while Cloud's calm becomes her refuge. But the fragile balance between them shatters when an experiment goes wrong and their powers swap. Now, Aru feels nothing for the first time in her life, while Cloud is overwhelmed by every emotion he never knew he had. Their bond deepens as Cloud begins to experience love, fear, and tenderness for Aru; feelings that both heal and destroy him. Just as they start to believe they might escape together, Cloud vanishes without a trace, leaving only the echo of his newfound humanity behind. Aru is left in a world of numbness, clutching the memory of the boy who taught her what it meant to feel, will she find what she has lost or will she find answers she doesn't want looking for him. Before the legends, before the wars that would swallow continents, there was only a wandering healer named Kael-moving from battlefield to battlefield, saving the dying while refusing to be saved himself. With fractured divine power flickering beneath his skin and a past he will not speak of, Kael walks the burning frontiers between three warring nations, driven only by rumors of ancient relics said to restore what he has lost. But the deeper he travels into the smoke and ruin, the more the land itself begins to whisper his name. And before long, Kael realizes the greatest danger is not the armies tearing the world apart- but what he might become if he stops running.

One day, after school, a young girl named Emma-Jane waited idly for her father as he had been late that afternoon. One of her high school teachers, Scott Casey, approached her and engaged in friendly conversation. Little did she know, it would change her life forever. So, what happens when you really like reading grimdark stories but then decide to write one yourself? I mashed together a LOT of different ideas related to the hallucinations of the brain (Fran Bow and Lil Miss Rarity in particular) so some of these elements will be similar, but I tried to make the concept as unique as possible. Hope you like it!

On a humid night in Miami, Ray wakes up in an abandoned stadium to hear desperate calls for help. When he rushes over to the girl calling out, she asks him where she is, to which Ray realizes he has no answer. In fact, the only personal information Ray can remember is his own name, and the same goes for Paula. To make matters even more confusing, suddenly Ray is struck by streams of light--streams of light, he realizes, that are spilling out of the girl's own eyes. A strong sense that they shouldn't ask for help, Paula's blinding eyes, a raven that won't seem to leave them alone, and bizarre tattoos on their left arms--nothing seems to add up, and the two are determined to make sense of their pasts.

Arin had never really been particularly smart - she certainly wasn't stupid, just average really - and she was definitely naive. She'd also elected to walk after dark with both her headphones in, listening to loud music to drown out the night. That's really all she could remember. That and what came next. She started to cross the street when suddenly there was a flash of light, the rancid smell of burning rubber, and a sharp pain in her neck. Just like that, her life was over. Dark and Anti will show up a few chapters in, please bear with me here. I want to make this a quality story. AU in which Dark and Anti are the result of tests to unlock the full potential of the human brain.

Peter was falling. Not literally of course, as its kinda hard to fall when you've been strapped to a table for an indeterminable amount of time, writhing in agony. But it sure felt like he was falling. Down, down, down and right out of his mind. But the worst part is, he doesn't even think he minds anymore (at least it might make everything stop). Or, Peter gets bit by a Spider, Norman finds out immediately, and our favorite web-slinger's backstory takes a few wrong turns and Peter loses his mind.

After the apocalypse, humanity began living within huge defensive strongholds to survive. New Aetherra is the only empire-sized city in the east surrounded by sturdy walls and covered by human-made atmospheric barrier. It was built and is governed under three bodies-the Government, the Novu Babel, and the Hunter Force-soldiers trained for battle against unknown creatures outside the city. Ian Velen, a troublesome weak Beta, was hated by the people around him including his own family. He only desired to go outside the city despite the dangers. His Alpha brothers loathed him thinking that he was the product of their mother's sin, and his father couldn't imagine him as his own. Despite his weak physique, he managed to become a Hunter and even had the nerve to confess and propose a marriage to his crush, Axel Krestel, the commander of an independent elite division, in front of so many people. The commander's disgust was obvious, and Ian had an idea that his actions stemmed from his crazy desperation to escape the city. He knew his background had more to it than what was seen outside. Taking an unknown drug on schedule to stabilize this unknown hunger to escape the city was just one part of it. But then an incident occurred. He missed his scheduled dose. His mother warned him that his life would be in danger.

For more than half their lives, five boys and one girl have been excluded from the rest of society, only known as the members Project Overtime. In a desire to experiment, The Professor took in orphan children and equipped them with technological replacements for various limbs and organs, hoping to perfect what could be the peak of the human species for fighting crime. Having been perfected for thirteen years, the final stage of their experiment has arrived: their implementation. If the six are able to merge with normal human life, all while demonstrating how successful and operational their abilities are, their experiment will be deemed a success and thus will make The Professor millions. What better way to test the exposure to normal life than by being throw into the most criminally charged high school in the district: the ultimate test of their loyalty and capability. Merging with the outside world has proven to be difficult after years of captivity, but The Overtimers refuse to let the mission of their lives be deemed a failure. After all, they're always working overtime if they've never been off the clock. ✦ rankings ✦ #32 in youngadultreads #171 in science #928 in action - competed ✧ july 23, 2018
