Chase and Ryder

"Is this all mine?" Chase asks me.

"Yep, well, half of it. You and I share this place." I say. "Go ahead look around, just don't go outside, I wouldn't want you running away."

"Oh no sir! I'm waiting right here."

"Why? Don't you want to look around?" I say reaching into the fridge to see if we have anything left for him and I.

"Just in case Skye comes here."

"Skye? Who's Skye?"

"She's the girl I met at the vet." Chase says.

"Why is her name Skye?"

"I don't know, but she said she knew how to fly!" I find a half eaten piece of sausage left in the fridge from dinner a few nights ago.

"Where did she learn how to fly?" I start heating it up in the microwave for Chase. I don't think I can hold down food after a day like today.

"I don't know, she never told me! That's why I need to see her again!" He whined.

"I'm sorry bud, she probably has an owner. Now come over here and eat some dinner." I put the sausage in one of my cereal bowls and placed it on the floor.

Chase looks at it for a long time then he sniffs it. He looks up at me with confusion. "What is this?"

I sit down on the floor next to him and scratch behind his ears. "Sausage, it's just rolled up meat I think."

"Are you sure I can eat this?"

"Yeah why not?" I ask.

"Because I've never had a bowl to myself before. I always had to share with my brothers."

"Where you the..." If I call him the runt I might offend him so I just trailed off.

"The runt? No, I was worse. I was the middle pup, I wish I was the runt, even he got more attention than me."

"I'm sorry Chase, I'm 100% sure you can eat every last bit of that sausage"

"Thanks Ryder!" I can't help but feel bad for him, the poor pup never knew what real family was.

Katie's POV

I walk home alone that night thinking about Chase and Ryder. I don't know what's wrong with me! Usually I think about Chris and all the school work that's due Monday but today I'm thinking about Ryder. I mean Ryder! Adventure bay elementary's social out cast. He's always making weird stuff like a spoon catapult or a light up backpack or an ATV. Wait, never mind, I kind of think his ATV is cool but other than that he's weird.

"Boo"

"Aaaaah" I scream. I turn and it's no other than Chris Smith. "Chris you scared me half to death!" He has this stupid smile on his face and I can't help but forgive him.

Chris puts his arm around me but I quickly push it off.

"What?" He says.

"What do you mean, 'what'? I told you a million times before and I'll say it again. You and I ARE 8 YEARS OLD. You know I can't date until I'm 13!" I snap.

"But your mom is never at the clinic anymore since she got her job in the city." He counters.

"It doesn't matter, I still respect her rules because I love her. What about my dad?"

"You told me yourself you don't have a dad, he left you before you were born. I doubt he's coming back"

"One day when my dad comes back he's going to smack you for saying that" He knows I'm just messing with him but he said nothing but the truth. My dad did leave before I was born and left my mom to take care of me. I'm not mad at him though because my mom was such a nice and caring mother to me. Besides why be mad at something I can't control? It's just a big waste of my time.

"Katie, babe,"

"I'm not messing around Chris, and don't ever call me babe."

"Gosh sorry. Night" He says.

"Whatever, I doesn't matter any ways you'll do something tomorrow and I'll get mad at you again, and then you won't care again."

"Exactly" He says.

"I hate you. Good night"

"Whatever Katie" He says walking away "We both know you like me."

I blush which quickly turns into anger. I stomp my way all the way to my room and get ready for bed. I drink some warm milk like I always do before bed. The front of the clinic is made of glass so any one could look at me stand there and drink my milk. Out my window is a perfect view of Ryder's house, more like tower. His parents are rich so they can afford living in such a big house with a huge yard. I finally make my way to bed.

I wake up to the sound of my door bell. Probably Chris coming to apologize or something. I go into my living room and am horrified to see Ryder standing there with Chase. I don't know why but I start fixing my hair. I open the door and a fall breeze blows in.

"Ryder, I don't work on Sunday come back after school tomorrow or something"

"I know, I was just wondering if you could spare me some of your kibble?"

"Why can't your parents buy it for you?" I say a bit annoyed. I really did not want to see him first thing this morning.

To my surprise he didn't answer he just stared at his feet. That's when I knew something wasn't right.
