Hollow Knight Review

I recently played and beat Hollow Knight. The game is full of content and is one of the greatest Metroidvania I've ever played.

For starters the game has a very clean style, it looks like a Disney movie from the 60s with how everything moves and the detail in the art. I especially enjoy the fully animated cutscenes that only further this feeling.

There are areas where the backgrounds will blow you away but really there's nothing too crazy. It is only a 15 dollar game so it's very impressive to see what they did with it.

The gameplay is a typical MetroidVania with all the power ups you know and love. Dash, charge attack, range attack, ground pound move, double jump, etc. I like some of the twists on them but they are all quite basic powers.

It's fun to mix them with the charms which add a new layer to combat. You can form all kinds of strategies depending on what you want to do. The game gives you lots of options so you don't just have to try over and over.

This game is very hard but it's fair, if you're willing to play it safer you won't risk getting killed as much. You also have tools like upgrading your nail and all sorts of shops where you can store money and even summon your Shade.

When you die in this game you leave behind a Shade, you have to kill it to get your money back and to have a full capacity soul meter.

Speaking of soul that's another unique mechanic. You can heal as long as you take soul from enemies by attacking them. Soul management is key if you want to stand a chance against the harder bosses.

The game also has an excellent world, with tons of variety that connects together in unique ways. It's a joy to discover new paths and find a ton of brand new areas to explore.

This is the same with the world's lore. You can discover so much by exploring and hitting every enemy with the Dream Nail. The world is filled with little details that really impressed me.

Not only that but the story is quite endearing as you watch it unfold. You just come across a broken kingdom and help people with your emotionless character. He only has one goal, stop the Infection.

The final boss, no spoilers here, is brilliantly done and rewards you with more challenge the more you explore the entire kingdom of Hollownest.

I never found the music too interesting but some of it was stuck in my head as I explored the world.

The game isn't done yet however. You have 40 hours of exploration to complete it filled with tons of secret bosses, collectibles, and upgrades. So much is optional. When I first beat the game I only had 50%. So I kept playing and pushing myself until I ended with 104%.

The game is jam packed with secrets and trust me discovering them all feels so good.

Seriously this game is the gift that keeps on giving. With free expansions adding even more content like the brand new Gods and Glory expansion coming to Switch first next week.

Hollow Knight is an experience you shouldn't pass up if you're a fan of MetroidVania and exploring a deep and exciting world.

I recommend this game 100% to any fan of the genre. It's a bargain for how much fun you'll have and well worth a look.

So now that the review's done let's talk about the Nindies showcase they just had earlier today.

There were a lot of cool games shown off and it's nice to have updates for some other games like Morphies Law. I'm interested in a couple but none of them stuck out to me like Everspace.

That game just looks stellar and I'll definitely be picking it up towards the end of the year.

Just some more updates the Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Expansion coming next month will be receiving a quick review. I'm not sure if I'll review Megaman 11 but I might depending on what I find in the game.

Lastly thank you all for reading and I hope you enjoyed! Have a great day! Bye!
