**Carl's POV**

"Quiet." Carol said as we stood there on guard. I paced back and forth not bothering to answer.

"It's easy to forget how loud the world used to be." She said, still trying to get me to talk. She laughed slightly.

"I used to complain about it all the time. Traffic, construction, car alarms. Noise pollution, oohh. What I wouldn't give for the sweet sound of a jumbo jet." Carol said and I snickered.

"It would be, it would be even sweeter if we were all on it" I said still slightly laughing. I thought of Hailey. How she would be safe from everything if we were. My mom. She might not have died if we were on that plane. My face became cold. Carol must've picked up on this.

"Your mom was proud of you." She said and I snickered.

"For what? Being mean to her?" I said. I looked down, not daring to make eye contact with her.

"Noo, you can't think about that." She said plainly. I snickered again. My eyes started to well up.

"That's all I think about." I said and I heard a distant rumble.

"Please be them." I said quietly. I wanted to talk to Hailey. No, I needed to talk to her. I missed her so much and she better be safe. I saw the car in the distance and I ran over to unlock the lock on the first gate. I ran back and opened the second gate. My dad got out and told them to drive it up. My dad hugged me and asked where everyone was and I told him in the cell block. I saw Carol looking around in the car and the car drove up past us.

"Where's Daryl? And Hailey?" She asked and I immediately looked at her. I looked at my dad for an explanation. Oh god, what happened? Is she alright? Is she... dead?

"It's alright. They're alive. We ran into their brother. They went off." My dad said and I stared at him. What? She left. She's gone? Why, what happened? Did I do something? She doesn't even know her brother, why would she leave with him? Carol pretty much asked the same thing about Daryl. My dad nodded and my eyes welled up with tears and they quickly escaped.

"Are they coming back?" Carol asked and I looked at my dad. He put his hand on her shoulder and I knew the answer was no. Carol got upset and I started to walk towards the prison. I heard my dad call after me but I didn't care.

Hailey left me.

**Hailey's POV**
**The Next Day**

We've been walking forever or what feels like it. My face was still wet from my recent tears of leaving Carl. They took shelter in a small cave structure they found but I stayed in a tree. I wanted to be alone and besides, I'm not good with small spaces. I woke up to a rock being thrown at me from down below. Not hard like a threat but just to hit the bark beside me to wake me up. I quickly jumped down and landed safely and we started walking again.

We walked for a while. Im not even sure how long. Merle had to pee so we stopped for a minute. I turned around so I didn't see anything I don't wanna see.

"Ain't nothing out here 'cept mosquitos and ants." Daryl said as he looked around for breakfast.

"Patience little brother. Sooner or later, a squirrel is bound to cross your path." Merle said as he did his business.

"Even so, they ain't much food." Daryl said as he made eye contact with me. I lifted the corners of my lips slightly and he nodded his head.

"It's better than nothing." Merle said.
