Chapter 11 - And You Left Him There?

*5 month time jump*
(Hailey's POV)

We have been trying to get to Atlanta for 5 months and we are so close now. I know it was only supposed to be a 5 or 6 day journey but every house we came across we stayed in for about two days and then we fell into a small town and stayed there for about a month or two and we have been on the run for a while now. We have been on the highway for a few hours now and we can see Atlanta in the distance. We almost forgot where we were traveling to a few times. Everyone is still alive but we are no where near the same person except Gabe. He hasn't changed at all and he is still the same fun loving yet serious kid I grew up with. We all have become harder but I think I am the worst. We have seen so many people die on the way here. I would make a friend and then the would get bitten or I would meet a new person and they would be attacked. We met a few small groups but they all die within about two days. We have decided that we will not go with a group unless there are more than 10 people.

There will be less danger but more of a heartbreak if that protection goes downhill.

Evelyn has grown unafraid but still terrified. She acts unfazed when someone dies but I've heard her cry herself to sleep at night and Katherine is the same way. Cody is distant but is only close with Parker and Parker has grown stronger inside and out. Gabe, like I said, is almost the same. We just keep walking at then at night we go to the edge of the tree line and climb up a tree to sleep. Then when the morning comes, we each eat a can of food and go on our way. We have to stop often for a bathroom break or just to sit down and rest. Today we were walking and we just stopped for a good hour just to stare are to view of the city. After all this time, it felt like we would never make it.

But we did.

The walking was really getting to me and I can't wait to have a quality bed of some sorts. I mean a tree does nothing and back when we stayed in the houses, a tent isn't really that comfortable. We found a lot while we stopped at the houses. More food and camping gear, small pots, batteries, and a lot of water. We have actually be thriving out here and I'm starting to rethink this Atlanta thing. Maybe I led them out here for nothing. What if they hate me because everything goes down hill? What if there is nothing there? What if Michael lied? What am I saying, Michael would let his last words be a lie... Would he? Then we hear it.

There was a loud car alarm going off. I was the first to hear it but then the rest of them heard it. We listened carefully and decided that it was up on that mountain. I'm just not sure where because it was echoing off in all directions. We all started running but it was still a good distance away. We would be lucky if we found it by tonight.

*Time jump, the next day*

We all sat down to rest for a few minutes and we all fell asleep. Ugh it's the morning and I can't believe we lost the noise. It took about a half an hour to wake everyone up. When everyone was up we decided to pursue the alarm that we heard yesterday. That's when we heard the raspy voice of a man yelling.

"... AND YOU LEFT HIM THERE?!"
